How do you determin when they are bad?

Well, other than just visible damage or chronological age, you can get an ohm meter reading across from end to end & they should meet the appropriate specification for your engine. You should be able to find that spec in the appropriate Haynes manual.

Plug wires have also been known to "leak" spark if you have a nick in the insulation, and that can affect your idle & performance drastically, not to mention the other obvious dangers.


Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Typically, you will get misfires, especially when the air is damp..
