I recently had my front drivers side axle replaced (CV joint was going). I noticed a rubbing sound when I got the car back , but couldn't see anything. After a while I noticed a grinding on full-on right turns. I looked again and could see two distinct areas on the outer part of the rotor where something was rubbing. I took apart the brakes and found out that it's my caliper mounting bracket.

I'm guessing the wheel bearing on that side is shot. Could it be anything else related to the axle replacement? Think they screwed up my bearing on disassembly or assembly?

My next step would be to get the bearing on that side replaced, I just wanted someone to confirm my suspicions.

And no, I won't be taking it back to that place again.

When I bought my 1995 Contour I always joked I would drive it until the wheels fell off...never did I realize that with this car, that could actually happen!

Check the brake pad retainer spring. My friend here just did his brakes a forgot one spring and the right side made a nasty noise every time he turned. The spring is on the outer side of the caliper and is about 4 to 5 inches long.
Good luck.

Yeah, everything is in its place. That's why I took it apart initially, thinking something wasn't put together right, plus to see where it was rubbing.

Yesterday, I took it to the dealership (Bob Gillingham Ford, Parma, Ohio, great service department) and they confirmed that the wheel bearing needed replaced.

On a side note, they said it looked like the original place that did the axle hadn't torqued it down all the way, drove on it, then snugged it up, but of course, that's too late.

So I got my car back and I'm all happy, when today, on a hard right turn.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrind!

Can the axle nut come loose? Isn't this a locking nut?

Any ideas would be great.
