Does it make sense to use one?

Makes sense? In what way? Performance? Price?

It usually hampers performance by mingling the wasted gas and exhaust housing outlet at a flat flange.
Also it normally uses a flapper style gate that is horrible for air flow and induces swirl and perpendicular airflow at the flange.

So lots of turbulence, likely to have boost creep, effectively makes the downpipe act much smaller than it is.

They are cheaper by a couple hundred bucks though. (internally gated turbo vs turbo & external wastegate)

So that style can be used but it's not as good performance wise & harder to make fit piping wise.

Still I would not "not use" an internally gated turbo just because it's internally gated. I've had several cars with Mitsu turbos (12A, 14B, 14G, Super-16G, & 20G) and built one that used two of them. They still boosted just fine...
