So, I was running Windows Update and got this:

Quote:

The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be a non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.

Yeah, like if I was running a ripped-off copy of windows I wouldn't know it...

that is why you should control what updates you download. I only download the ones that I want to

basicly its microsofts way of getting there money

unless you bought the copy of windows yourself or got it straigh from a dell or a big company

there is a chance that you running a pirated version of windows

sometime when you buy a computer off ebay or from a garage sale or a small place that assembles computers thell try to save money by using one copy of windows xp for x amount of computers and basicly the owners wouldn't have a clue that there copy of windows wasn't authentic

so microshaft came out with advantege crap basicly the point is

if you have an authentic version of xp it shouldn't bother you
you get all your updates every things good

but if your a pirate or you bought a computer from one of those places that install one licensed copy of xp on multiple computers it wont let you update and eventully unless you some how find a way to apply the updates with out automatic update your screwed if a big threat for windows xp machines come out

and there will be a file you can download inabout 13 minutes so you can by pass all that.

I just turned off automatic updates. It told me about the new update and what it did but there was no way in hell I was gonna do that.
Posted By: Tisby Re: Latest Windows Update... - 06/01/06 06:06 PM
I run the updates manually and I'm not worried about having a pirated version cause it'd be Dell's problem, not mine. I just think it's kinda dumb - like somebodey with a pirated version is actually gonna downlaod that [censored]. Any if they did, they're too stupid to be using a computer anyway...

The point of the matter is that a lot of people using pirated versions of software don't even know that they are. The point, as with most anti-piracy measures, is to punish those that are honest (or at least think they are) rather than those that actually are doing it on purpose because, like you said, they'll bypass the thing.

?????

Just for information purposes the file that you would replace to get rid of the notifications is in the C:\windows folder.

LegitCheckControl.dll is the name of the file, and the version number would have to match a legit (in the eyes of Microsoft) copy.

If you try to stop the WGAmotify process it'll just keep popping right up.

Star icon?? I just did updates this afternoon and no icon here. (Maybe because I have XP Pro?)

Most of the software, including WinXP, on my computer is legal. However I can understand that a lot of people don't realize they are buying illegal software. A neighbor of mine just bought a really old Dell laptop (Latitude CPI) from eBay, with XP but no disc; I did't have the heart to tell them it might be illegal.

ive got a little star in the bottom right corner, that continually pops up a message box reminding me of my "non-genuine" copy.

I picked up a virus while at school and had to use a friend's cd to reinstall.

I guess I have genuine windows XP, no star so far. (hey that rhymed.) But then again my father amd I are using the same XP pro on our two computers, so I don't think we will have a problem.

Ah ok. Makes sense, I suppose Microsoft wants to make it as annoying as possible till you purchase a so-called "genuine" copy.

sure you have a choice, install it or stop getting updates

If you click on custom in windows update it will let you hide any updates you don't want to install. Hiding an update prevents that little windows update icon from appearing in the system tray and popping up a balloon telling you you have available updates.

Guys, please don't post how to defeat WGA. Just do a search on your favorite search engine and be done with it.
