I have a couple of questions and figured just faster to ask them than to search them. Yes I am lazy.
Those of you who use a friction modifier in your transmissions, what brand do you use, like and where can you buy it and how much?
Does the SVT Contour have a hydraulic clutch or a cable?
Thanks,
Laura....you know I'm a good resource for you.
For the friction modifier I believe it was a Ford part number XL-7 or something. If you ask for "old stinky" when you say friction modifier the parts guy should know. Be sure to use at most 1/2 the bottle.
As for the clutch, yes it is hydraulic. The bleeder is on the bell housing rougly under the WP pully area.
Any other questions?
Thanks Evan. Yes you are a good source.
Does the friction modifier have to be a Ford product, is there not something made by lucas oil or whatever that is good too?
To be honest I am sort of undecided on the whole friction modifier issue.
If it wasn't so expensive I would go with the Ford Honey. Reason being is that yes the friction modifier does improve shifting in the short term but who knows what it can do over a longer period of time since the trans was not designed for it.
I hear yah but I am having issues that I thikn it will resolve. Just have never used it before and dont know what brands to use.
Go with Mobil1 ATF and the Ford Friction Modifier (XL-5 or XL-7, can't recall which one). That seemed to work best for me untill the 2nd gear syncro was on it's way out.
Okay then thanks so much. Yes I already use Mobil 1
I am now using Mobil1 and XL-7... and if you really want I have a few XL3 & XL7 bottles sitting in my garage that I need to get rid off..
but I am not happy with that combo.. this winter it wasn't the best for me.. in the summer and when its warmed up its fine.. but when cold crappy..
I am switching to Royal Purple Synromax before this winter..
hope that helps.
Cheers
I've tried everything from the Mobil 1 "cocktail" to Ford Honey (with and without FM) to ATF+3 to Synchromax, and the Synchromax is the hands down winner as far as I'm concerned. Definite improvement when shifting in the cold, and on par with the Honey in the warm. It doesn't hurt that it's less than half the price of Honey, and it's easy to sqirt in the tranny via the squeeze bottle, too!
Where can you buy the royal purple and how much does it usually cost?
I got it at Cobra in Mississauga.. its like $11/L or something like that.. you need 3L of the stuff..
They also have it at Performance world in Brampton..
and if that doesn't help you go to Royalpurple.com and check the retailer locater
cheers
Martin
Laura, I don't know how close you are to Newmarket, I know Wes (1FASTDAD) got his Royal Purple from a shop called Overdrive.
Aaron
I would agree that the RP Syncromax is the way to go.
I've had the mobil 1, with the ford FM and although that had a smoother feeling shift, there is some speculation that the FM (Friction Modifier) has contributed to some premature wear. (or at least that's my take on the issue)
RP Syncormax is also available at any Performance Improvements, at a cost of ~$11.00/quart.
Hope this helps.
John.
I use the ford XL stuff. Just ask for Mr. Stinky!!!
