I do software validation and testing for Intel's PC graphics. I left the Bay Area two years ago. Fed up with the madness there. I live in the Sierra Nevada Foothills and it is refreshingly pleasant. Now, if only I can get a DSL connection! No switches close enough to me at this time.

Ahh - the beautiful Auburn area? My fiancee's sister lives in Roseville. The whole area is sweet. It's strange being able to actually drive around (and actually move) somewhere.

1funsvt, not quite the Auburn area, but 35 miles southeast. I'm closer to the Folsom/El Dorado Hills area if you are familiar. I live at about 1000' elevation, in the foothills. It rained today and the air is so fresh it makes you giddy to breathe it. You will love it up here. Bet!

Folsom is awesome. I'd move there in a heartbeat. We may in 1-2 yrs. We are renting a 1200 sq ft house in the Bay area for $2800 month which is worth $1M. This is ridiculous. I think the stock market is going to continue to slow down, resulting in fewer dot-com millionaires, leading to a minor recession in Silicon Valley. We'll see. I'll probably see you in a year or two, then us SVT'ers can go screaming around Folsom Lake.

Why, Contour SVT? Because none of my friends have one and they all turned up their noses when I talked about ordering it. Alot of them said, Ford? why not a 540 Sport or at least a M3? Because I like it and I don't do things to please anyone except me (car wise). I really like adding stuff to it, making it different. I have done quite a bit of that.

To 1FUNSVT,
Here is the list of stuff I have done to the 99 SVT...Exterior: Carbon Fiber Sail Panels, color matched lower rear bumper & Powertone exhaust tips (3.5" with mesh inserts). Engine:KKM w/heat shield, mod chip, Mobil 1. Chassis: Eibach Sport Springs, Yellow Koni adjustable shocks, South County Motorsports rear sway bar, Team Dynamics Motorsport wheels 18X8 with Nitto 555 225/40/18. Interior: Momo shift knob. On order yet delivered: Baer 13" front brake kit with special 2-piece lightweight rotors (gas slotted only), Performance Friction pads, stainless lines. Rear KVR pads and stainless lines. I will have the brake stuff on the car by December. The reason for the brakes is that I consider brakes just like real horsepower for the end of the straight. If I can't beat some car down the straight, I will outbrake them and exit the corner faster to make up for it. I have tried to do things to the car to make it look touring not ricey. More industrial, hardnosed & purposeful. I really enjoy it.I have owned quite a few "performance" cars and the SVT is starting to feel and behave very "performance".

Hope you guys don't mind me signing on here.
Grew up 6th-12th and a year junior college in San Jose. My mom still lives off Lawrence Expressway and 4 brothers/sisters in bay area and one in San Luis Obispo.

You know about costs there better than me which is why did not return in '92 after leaving Army. I already had a 1600ft2 house that I designed and had built in '86 for $65k in a subdivision built around golf course. My wife still works on Ft Rucker,AL which is home of Army flight training. She is also horse nut, has 2, which would not work out there.

VMCiii, you were my first post on this site as you may recall. Toadster, I see your name a lot and see that several of you work for Intel. Anyone know Intel guy last name Lamey? Glad to see that Katy is not actually Gus. Guy Apple I worked all night on weekends at 7/11 just off Lawrence Xpressway in Sunnyvale. Is it still there?

Lance, what has been done to that SHO? Through open track sessions (not in my Tour, in my Stang), I have met the guy with the quickest SHO on the planet. He makes 405HP *at the wheels*, about 450 @ the crank. I'm too tired to remember his name right now; I think he has an English accent, he's in his 50's, and I think he lives in the north Bay (or somewhere in the Bay area). I also met another SHO guy (1989 car) who is making 252HP at the wheels, about 280 at the crank.
He and I were chasing each other around Thunderhill last spring. I think his name is Bernard, and he lives in the north Bay. Interestingly, at Watkins Glen back east, I saw the 1989 SHO SCCA Showroom Stock Ninja Turtles car. Hilarious paint job.

To SVTCole,
Hey the 7-11 that you're referring to is the one on Benton. I know it well. My wife is on a first name basis with the current owner because she buys Lotto tickets there all the time and my son goes to Santa Clara High just about a 1/2 mile away further down Benton. Small world you know...

1funsvt:

I think the guy you are talking about with the 450 horse SHO is Nick Crimes. Quite the ride -- wish I had a chance to see it in action. I'm not sure who the other one is -- the name doesn't ring a bell but that doesn't mean that much.

I did see a SHO up at Thunderhill the last time I was up but never did talk to the owners; I had three friends with me and we were swapping cars back and forth so I was kept pretty busy as-was.

My SHO is mostly stock. I have Konis on the front [only], poly bushings, a 26mm sway bar on the back with some homemade polyethelene bushings, two sets of cheap [OZ Cignus -- on fire sale for $59/ea, so I can't complain] 16x7.5" wheels, one with S-02s and one with RE730s, and some Porterfield R4 pads on the front [best $150 I've ever spent on that car]. I've got a SHO Shop cat system and a dynomax catback which has been customized somewhat over the years as the mufflers have rusted, cracked, etc [one straight-through Race Magnum on the left side, a 24" glasspack in place of the resonator, and the normal Dynomax on the right side, with the inlet pipe crimp busted, so it leaks].
Also have a homemade 4" ram-air, K&N filter, and 80mm MAF [which is still in the experimentation stage, as I can't seem to get a good working program for my LPM that I've had for 2 years].
I've been really happy with the performance of the car, and my experiences at Thunderhill have only reinforced that; I had my Contour up there the last time I went, and my friend and his wife brought their souped-up GTP [which will kill the SHO in a straight line]. Definitely a good time [and the SHO was definitely the favorite, both from the instructors and the three of us].

It's on its third engine [long story, but we'll say one was because I got it used and didn't check it closely enough -- the other one just got tired, I guess -- at 176k that might be excusable], second tranny, second steering rack, third set of Konis [yes, I drive it hard], and I don't know how many other things. The A/C is poor, the exhaust leaks, the driver-side door is bent a little, the engine burns about a quart every 500 miles, but the intake sound is intoxicating and the punch and the handling just finish up the package.

I would really like to dump some [more] money into it and put on real brakes [these are good with these pads -- no fade even at full bore through thunderhill, but the rotors have got to be getting really hot], 3.2L pistons, stage II cams, a Quaife, and some suspension tweaks. No blower -- don't want anything messing up that intake sound -- and all I'm looking for is ~290 HP and some weight reduction. And I could still have a pretty decent car as a daily driver [the Contour].

Probably a rather silly thing to do, as I could just take the engine and drop into the back of something else for the same amount of money, most likely. A Fiero with that engine would be pretty fun, but that's probably blasphemy ;-), and my SHO is still my first love [as my mom said -- if you love your wife as much as you love that car, she'll be the happiest woman on the planet.. but that's OT].

Anyhow, a little longer post than I intended...
Posted By: 1funsvt Re: seeing some new names... - 11/07/00 07:51 PM
Yep, it's Nick. I met him last time at Thunderhill. Talk about a sleeper. A 450HP Taurus? Sheez. I think that's like 50HP less than Winston Cup restrictor plate cars! The other guy is Bernard, a German guy in his 50's who lives in Santa Rosa or somewhere up there. Nick and Bernard get their work done at North Bay Motorsports (I think that's the name). Bernard has the usual SHO Shop intake and exhaust goodies, along with their hot cams. The car is an '89 (1st year) and is in showroom condition. Very neat car!!! He and I are very comparable around the track (when I'm in my track-prepared Mustang).

Thanks for the info about your car, it sounds really neat.

I have another friend on the SHOTimes mailing list - John Kling, he may go by "Static" or "SHOStatic" on the list - seen any posts of his? He is in Decatur, IL.

Jeff

Hey fellow Contour addicts! Although I guess I am somewhat outside the ranks now since "'Toura" with, very little warning, "threw a rod" on 101 at rush hour. Ironically it happened directly at the exit for "South City Ford". "The bad news," the S/A said "is that a new engine will run you $6000 bucks"(!) He said without blinking that the good news was he could get a new engine in about a month. Neither he nor Ford, however, can tell me why a perfectly serviced engine should blow. W/83k miles, I was on the verge of trading but to have it go this way is sickening... The good thing is, perhaps, I'll now get that SVT I've always wanted (and, yes Guy Apple, my colleagues are all saying the same thing). I know of two in silver at Walnut Creek Ford. Has anyone seen any others about the Bay Area?

Cheers,
John

So I'm not exactly a "new" member, I've been reading ceg.org since March last year. (In fact, it was this group that convinced me to buy a Contour--you guys rock! If it weren't for this group, I would probably be driving a Jetta with no power and a crappy interior. :)) I'm a very infrequent poster, but I love how nice everyone is to each other...I look forward to meeting some of you people at the meet!

I'm not really new but I'll sign on here since I missed it the first time.

Hey Chris (marshalc) I hope you are hearing this....shes dogging your power wink

Hey Bonnie, please bring that fine a$$ friend of yours, you know the Angelina Jolie look-alike. I gotta meet her! I hope you still wanna go to the meet.

Hey Nick, I'm not trying to dog anyone or their car. smile I test drove a Jetta (I think they're cute cars...I really wanted one), but when I took the Contour out, I sorta just connected with it. Plus the Jetta was like $4000 more, and had these seats with a cheesy confetti pattern on them. smile

Hehe, and I'll ask my friend if she's free that day...if she is, I'll have her come along. wink

Hey V6Mama, yeah, there needs to be a more female Contour drivers joining this group! smile Out of the 4254 registered members, you would think that a third of them *at least* are female. Hmm, but maybe they're like me in that they've been around and read the forums, but are too intimidated to post. Maybe we should start a female Contour drivers forum?? We can chat about fun girly stuff, and whenever the boys are bored, they can drop in. smile

Hey, what do you guys think of people putting flyers and stuff on your windshield? I personally get really annoyed by it, but was curious as to what other people think. There's another girl in my apartment complex who drives a blue Contour, and I want to put a note about ceg.org on her car, but I don't want to annoy her. What do you guys think?
Posted By: Stinger00 Re: seeing some new names... - 07/11/01 12:26 AM
i think its annoying when its a mass mailer, but when its selective it's cool.
i wouldn't mind seeing a note about the CEG on my car smile

my 2 cents

I didn't realize this was the same post from way back when...one of my first. I am going to be in California for a family vacation during this timeframe and plan to swing by the 22nd to meet some of you and check out your cars. I'm trying to talk two brothers into coming. I'm flying out so won't have the SVT. I did not realize this "ranch" is a mall. My mom said something about being off Hwy 17 in Milpitas?
Posted By: BonBon Re: seeing some new names... - 07/11/01 09:15 AM
It's good timing that you're going to be out here for the meet! smile McCarthy Ranch is not exactly a mall, it's a marketplace. It has stores like Borders, The Good Guys, and WalMart. I think it's actually off of 237, not 17. If you're going south on 880, you'll see it on your right hand side right before the 237 junction. Get on 237, and take the first exit. I hope that helps! smile
Posted By: SVTCole Re: seeing some new names... - 07/11/01 03:47 PM
Thanks BonBon, I would be coming from the south. Is 880 the road to Pleasanton? We are visiting Yosemite with my mom and 5 brothers and sisters. My brother is a car nut and drove my SVT once and I want to talk him into replacing his old Accord with a Contour.

Just a little side note, placing flyers on peoples cars is illegal in some counties unless you have a permit to do so. That said, I know there are plenty of contours in my neigborhood and it is not illegal to place something in someones mailbox.

well,
580 runs east/west through pleasanton. from oakland to well past modesto
680 runs north/south through pleasanton, from vallejo to san jose
880 runs like 680, north and south, but west, more like oakland to san jose.

Hi there.

I'm new. New to the forum, and new to owning a shiny spiffy neato black 2000 Contour SVT. Yowsa. I call it the "Vroom Machine". Never had a car that sounded quite like this car. There is just something really satisfying about an angry 24 valve V6 engine. laugh

Anyhoo, here's the dossier:
Name: Marianne
Location: San Joser
Occupation: Artist. Victim of the dot.com layoff craze, now working for a medical device company doing whatever they need me to do. Whatever I do, I do in San Carlos. It's a bit of a commute, but lots more fun in the Vroom Machine.

I'm still not sure if I want to let my dog ride in the new (for me) car.
