Saturday, July 26, 2003

Saturday, August 2, 2003

These are the dates that are available according to Dean.
Let me know - I'll have Dean update the site to whatever date we choose for everyone to sign up.

Thanks.

ditto for me.

the 19th, i'd have to cancel some plans - which I don't want to do - the 26th is also good for me, but the 2nd is perfect.

8/2 is fine with me as well. I can also do the week before.

ok, who all is going here? Lets make this our next meet. even if ya don't wanna dyno...but I know you doooooo.....

IIRC, ten

Maybe I'll Dyno my bike.
Posted By: ElKy Re: New England Dyno Dates - 06/26/03 03:14 PM
that would be cool
Posted By: GoodSki411 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 06/26/03 03:19 PM
Actually, funny you should mention that.

Steve and I went to the Classic Car Show on Elm Street this past Saturday (the 21st), and they had a dyno for motorcycles. It was pretty neat!

Hey Mike! That would be cool, but I don't think you can dyno a bike on that dynomometer. You would need to go to a special Bike Dyno shop. The drum that measures hp and tq is too large for a bike to spin.

Hope you can still make it and dyno one of the cars!
Posted By: JSmith_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 06/26/03 06:21 PM
any week is good for me so far. Just let me have some advanced notice when we decide on a final date. (a week or so)
Posted By: Ed98.5SVT Re: New England Dyno Dates - 06/26/03 07:30 PM
I certainly hope that our dyno day doesn't turn out like last year's (rain) or today (1 zillion degrees). The way I look at it, we have a 50/50 chance. 50% chance it will be 65 and raining 50% chance it will be 95 and humid.

I love NE!!!!!!

you need 10+ on the dyno for a rate of $65(3-6 Runs on the dyno) You drive your own Car aswell.. price includes BBQ
Add $10 for Air Fuel Ratio readings..
If you have 20+ then it will be $60 a Car
You can change out a quick mod while on the Dyno.(intake,Chip,MAF,TB,type of stuff)
once you take you car off the dyno(unstrap it)
you will have to pay to go back on..though at a lesser cost.

those that dont dyno but want to eat it will cost you $5 for the BBQ..

once the date is set and hugo has the go ahead anyone that will be dynoing there car will have to sign up on www.NEDYNO.com

Don't let it die damn it. I need my car dynoed to see if I wasted all that money I put into it.

I'm down for august 2nd.
Posted By: JSmith_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 06/29/03 02:42 AM
I guess I have to get my azz in gear to try and squeeze a few more ponies out through some more home grown mods.

I have an idea, I'm not too sure how well it will work, but if I come across some cash and free time I'll have to go ahead and try it out.
Posted By: BrApple_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 06/30/03 09:46 PM
depending on when this turns out I just had a thought.

it would be cool to have a base line on the new car and I could see if the DMD helps or hurts power, might be interesting

Jay the DMD install looked fairly simple, is it and could it be done on a day like this?

again the 2nd is out for me but the others are fine
Posted By: JSmith_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/01/03 04:53 AM
doing the DMD is only about a 1 hour job. But for a novice I'd say more like 2 or 3. The first time I did one it took a few hours.

Just follow the directions on the How-To here on the site and you'll be all set. All the part numbers are listed there as well. New bolt, new washer and new front crankshaft seal.

If you don't have the puller tool you can usually rent one at a parts store like Auto Zone.
Posted By: GR8SVT_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/02/03 07:18 PM
Alright - According to poll, it looks like I will be booking August 2nd as the Dyno Date.

Thanks!

Keep an eye out for the word to signup.

doh

I just realized that I'll be in NH on the 2nd, or at least getting ready to come home.

Maybe I'll have to stop by on my way home if thats the case. We'll see what happens.

awesome....got it in my calendar...can't wait.

now, this is my 1st dyno.

besides an oil change and cleanin my K&N prior is there anything I need to do to get ready?
someone gonna show me what I need to do when I get on the thing? you drive your own car up there right?

yeah - Dean will walk you through the steps. Basically, drive through the gears, till 4th, very slowly, no need to go to high rpms while getting to 4th.

Once in 4th, Dean will tell you to go....Hit the gas pedal hard, don't stop......hit redline, let go.

1) NEVER SHIFT INTO FIFTH.
2) NEVER HIT YOUR BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN!

Other than that. You're done.

Cleaning the K&N is a good idea...although remember, you don't have the 'air movement' as if you are driving on the streets.

If you feel uncomfortable, you can have Dean drive it...or of course, i'm always willing to help! lol.

any advice on the best way to swap out mods in order to get different readings in between runs?

How does it work for automatics? is there a point in time where he tells you to turn O/D on?
Posted By: GreenNuggs_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/03/03 05:41 PM
I've been dying to get a baseline on my 6. Can a fellow Duratec brethren get in on the action?!?! The 2nd sounds good to me.

of course man.....

just keep an eye out for the word - you will have to sign up on the new england dyno website. i'll let you know as soon as he gets back to me.

it looks like its going to be a small group .. well...at least 10. When you do a run or two, you will stop. You can swap out anything you want - as long as it doesn't hold up the runs for too long. I've done a Superchip swap in the middle, I've seen Intakes, etc....

Great question regarding automatics. I will have to get back to you on that. I will have to ask Dean.

never seen an auto on the dyno.

i'll get back to ya!!!!
Posted By: skunk_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/03/03 06:50 PM
good ? kim I have an auto too.
Posted By: ElKy Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/03/03 11:33 PM
Hugo..i thought the runs were done in third?
at least 3 of mine were and then 2 i did in 2nd to see if there was a difference.

as for autos: there was one there the last time we went.
dean just had him put it in second and get up to 2000rpm and then hold it, then gas it.
as for O/D i dont think you waould want to use it at all, because while in O/D you have no real powere transfer to the wheels, i think if you went into O/D on th edyno you would slow right down.

Depends on the code. If the car is running too lean or too rich it will certainly effect your numbers.

Ed, I've still got the P1121 code. I'm mechanically incompetent, so let me know if that means my car is running too rich or too lean.....

P1121 indicates that the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is inconsistent with the MAF sensor. Since you have been having MAF problems, it sounds like it is still not working correctly. Difficult to tell whether this would create a rich or lean condition though...

Could this also indicate a leak between the MAF and the Throttle body... Maybe the TB Gasket??????

Anybody???
Posted By: JSmith_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/08/03 07:11 PM
The MAF is sensing changes in air flow, but the computer is not receiving an input from the TPS saying that the throttle is opening.

Test your TPS sensor, it may have failed or have open/shorted windings. Likely needs replacement.

J,

is the TPS sensor the black plastic piece that sits on top of the MAF and which gets the plug into it?

any idea how to test the tps sensor?

Just curious. Does hot, humid weather have a negative effect on the dyno? The hotter, thick air usually robs horse power correct? Just wondering if august might be a bad time of year for this but i could be wrong.

the tps is the black curved plastic peice on the side of the throttle body. to test there should be a certain voltage when the throttle is clossed and it should range to a different value at WOT. sorry but I don't know the voltage values off hand

humid air is less dense than dry air

The answer to your question is yes, a hot humid day or any humid day for that matter is not the best choice of a day to do a dyno test on your engine, but since the test equipment compensates for the changes in performance realted to atmospheric conditions there is nothing to worry about.

but if you want in on the BBQ it will cost you $5

BBQ!?!?!

whats on the menu and who's cookin?

are we at 10 folks yet? come one, come on, you know you wanna.....

If we don't get enough people, anyone willing to extend the offer to some NECO folks?
a good chunk of them went to cougarfest where there was a dyno, so I doubt any of them will want to come, but the remaining folks that stayed home may want to get in on this.
Posted By: GR8SVT_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/11/03 02:12 PM
Hey Kim - That's a good idea. However, lets hold off on the invite I get a clearer picture of who is coming and who is not. I don't want this meet to end up with 20+ cars....it just takes too long. I think the min. number of cars is good - so I will let you know when you can extend the invite.

Also - Daniel, yes...a BBQ. The $65 price includes 3-6 dyno runs, a BBQ (Dean provides all of the food and drinks and even cooks it up!), a raffle, and a hell of a good time.

I don't even know what the BUTT dyno says cause my friggin IMRC grommet snapped on me....so me needs to get another one FAST before I can bolt the rest of the car up and start her up!

That's a great idea. Also, if Jay is unable to make it, someone can test out his theory regarding the Air Filter cap (KKM IIRC). That blue cap that goes in one end of the filter.
Posted By: ElKy Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/15/03 04:23 PM
no need to re-test it hugo.
he proved it last time with a 6hp increase with the cap in.

Oh really? I didn't think he removed the cap. I know the cap was in but I thought he forgot to remove the cap.
Posted By: JSmith_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/15/03 05:24 PM
I did. But if I remember you had to leave early. After you left and everyone was through, myself and a few others paid extra for a second dyno run and thats when i got in a few more runs with and without the cap in the KKM. It was a suprising increase in power from capping the end of the filter.

I never tested the idea with the MAF screen, but I tried it once at home and the butt dyno said there was better throttle response and a little more power especially in teh low RPMs. The dyno is the best place to test it out since you get real numbers rather than just relying on the sensation of acceleration during road testing without any kind of test equipment.

ok. cool. Yeah, I had to take off that day - 45 minute drive back to New Bedford, then a 4 hour drive up to Bartlett, NH! That sucked. In the rain & snow up there....took move like 6 hours to get there. damn - that was a rough day.

so a 6hp increase. wow. that's pretty significant.

I wonder how sitting still on a dyno effected his numbers......

You would think that moving at highway speeds or city traffic would effect airflow around the filter and maybe the numbers would be different
Posted By: JSmith_dup1 Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/15/03 05:55 PM
becasue the filter is tucked up in the corner of the engine bay I'm sure that there would be air flow around the filter but I don't see it being all that signifigant since its not directly in any kind of air stream.

However, I could see that the air flowing into the engine bay being warmer than at the dyno where it was indoors and the hood was open. On the highway, most of the air that comes into the engine bay has to first pass through the radiator where it will pick up some heat from the hot water inside the rad. Also have to take into effect ground level temperatures on the pavement, where on a sunny day they can be up to 50 degrees hotter than the air just a few feet off the pavement.

Very good point Ed.

Normally, numbers will be higher and "driving effects" will be felt more while driving on the streets (of course, the cooler the better) - ESPECIALLY when its intake related modifications.

That's a 6hp increase with still air.
This could effect it negatively as well. The plug could be blocking extra air that is coming in the the fender walls, however, with a 6hp increase with the cap in on the dyno....I leave the cap in and smile.

I think we all had to be there at 9:00 AM last time

Some of us met up on 495 around 8:30 and drove in from there.

Time to meet will most likely be in the 9 to 9:30am range.
That AM/PM selection doesn't really apply to us.

Currently we have 7. It's close so I'm going to hold off on have Kim extend the invite to the Cougar guys/gals.

If we get 10, that would be great, because that way, 1) it doesn't take as long and 2) the food will be served earlier and 3) there won't be such a rush to get a car on and off the dyno!

We'll wait another few days. Hopefully some more people sign up!

Where is Sergei anyway?? Has anyone kept in touch with him?
I'd like to check his car out and finally meet the guy! lol.

Nope. The seven that I said are those who have signed up.
Hopefully - you will be able to make it so that brings it to eight. So we would need two more.

but we need 10 cars to dyno, not people, to get the discount.

i'm sure you already knew that.

I might be interested in going to watch and hang out. I would pay for the BBQ. I don't need to sign up for that, do I?

I'm really not interested in dynoing since I have no mods to speak of. It would probably register low since I have never cleaned any part of the engine ('cept MAF sensor, thanks Kim) and now have 78,000 miles.

Maybe I will test drive a G35 that day and take a side trip to the dyno....

Ps> Seriously, I am very interested in how my numbers come out. I have noticed more of a difference on the low end than the high end with my mods since the last dyno.

1. New Exhaust Manifolds
2. Cleaned UIM/LIM/TB
3. Open Intake + Heatshield.
4. Opimized TB
5. Brullen Cat Back

I wonder, I am guessing 165 FWHP and 153 FWTQ....

Maybe you can do a couple of runs and then we can all help you clean the intakes while on the dyno. You can then do a couple of more runs to compare.

I'm unfortunatley not going to be able to make it.

I just found out that the person who I helped out with plowing snow this winter is having a cook out/party for everyone that did something to help him out since he was unable to do much work himself since he was recovering from congestive heart failure.

1 quick question here for those that know their shite.

Is is ok to dyno without the air filter at all? I'm curious to know how restrictive the stock airbox assembly is.

Not sure exactly how this is going to run. What I'd REALLY like to do is get a 2 baseline runs, take the car off the dyno and do the airbox mod (removing restrictive unneeded plastic pieces of the aibox) and then put that bad larry back on the dyno and get 2 more.
Posted By: ElKy Re: New England Dyno Dates - 07/29/03 01:53 PM
you dont want to actually take the car off the dyno...you will be charged twice.
do two runs...turn the car off..take your airbox off...do two more runs.
all done!

starting at 9am with only 10 on the dyno it will be over around 12-1pm the latest..and thats taking there time..

with 15+ cars its is over come 1-1:30...
then people usually just hang around talking and stuff..

I may have to meet up there to. Not exactly sure where "7 Lenora St" in Worcester is. Mapquest says to take exit 12 off of 290. That right?

Which rest stop is it exactly? It must be past Rt 3. Getting there at 8:20 in the morning on a Saturday no less will be doable.

First rest stop after passing Route 3. I believe it is also past the Route 4 exit as well. Exit 12 off of 290 is correct. CobraR got us there last time and I hope he comes through in the clutch again.

let me know how you guys are going down. I live in Marlboro off 495, so I could meet you all en route.

I'm not going up to the rest stop, but if you're taking 290, Rt9 or Mass pike, let me know the time and route and I'll meet the caravan!

If all goes to plan we'll be leaving the Chelmsford rest area around 8:30, and my guess is its 15-20 minutes to 290. If you have a 2 way radio tune it to channel 12 and we'll try to find you over the waves.

Well sweet. Surely looking forward to finally getting some numbers for my car! AND hanging out with some sweet CSVTs and their owners! I'm pretty sure I'm going to roll to the rest stop. I'm pretty sure I'm rolling solo to unless my bro gets the day off, so if you see a blue 6, dont make the guy in the car feel left out

Going out tonight so I'll probably be a little and at 8:15 tomorrow morning. Hopefully no See you tomorrow!

I wish I could head up but I only have a six hour window, if I have it, and that is to far to go from nearly the NY/CT line
