Do I need to do anything special to use a canoe in a lake in MA? Does a canoe require registration or anything like that?

Some paddles would help.

I think Doug's post was more helpful than ElKy's (though both are more helpful than this one!)

I don't believe you do unless te boat is 14' or longer and/or has a motor. Make sure you have one life vest per occupant.

Thanks Ryan. I'll be sure to bring life vests. If I do use a canoe, it would be my father-in-law's, and anyone that's heard about him knows he'll make sure I have everything to survive a month at sea!!

And to the other helpful posters here.....

you def. do not need to reg. a canoe to use in a lake, you will be set as long as you've got your oars and life jackets...i got busted on my jetski that was unregistered earlier this year and the cops just had me pull it out of the water...so you should be allllllll set
