What is the purpose of the hydraulic pump adapter?

To drive a hydraulic pump with a zetec.


The place that I bought it off of was an engineering firm and they were using it as a test setup. Fortunately, they didn't know what they doing and just stuck the whole deal on a shelf for almost 9 years. I bought the engine with the weird crap on it.

Off of the serp belt, or off the drive shaft? I'm surprized at these weird applications. I would have thought they would chose a carbureted model to simplify things.
