It's a cool fall day, 12:00 noon, dry pavement, good flat road. There are a bunch of cars lined up to race the 1/8 mile (not 1/4) from a dead stop. The drivers of all the cars are clones of your favourite race car driver. All the cars are 100% stock, rolling on factory rubber, in a perfect state of tune and have manual gearboxes. The cars are as follows:

2000 Contour SVT
2004 BMW 325i
2004 Nissan Altima 3.5L
2004 Jetta 1.8T
2004 Mazda 6 3.0L
2004 Lexus IS300
2004 Acura TSX
2004 Audi A4 3.0L Quattro

Place the cars in the order in which you think they would finish the 1/8 mile.

the csvt would imo
1 - lose
2 - unsure
3 - lose
4 - unsure, although i think it may be pretty close
6 - lose, quattro has a definite advantage
7 - lose
8 - unsure, i know that the 330 is faster but i don't know about the 325

Provided all cars are manuals...

The Contour wouldn't lose to all of them.

Matter of fact it would beat the BMW, Jetta, IS300, & TSX.

I don't know the stats for the Audi so it may beat that too.

It is slower then the 3L Mazda 6 (by a hair) and the 3.5L Altima (more then a hair) for certain.

i have a cougar and i KNOW i can beat an IS300 and the BMW and im sure if i had an SVT motor i could hang with or beat the acura and VW....and i know its against the rules of this topic but if the contour had a 3L against the mazda well then....

Actually the cars you picked are all close competition for the SVT. (Except the Altima which should run far far away from it)

I say the race would be very close between most of the cars in the 1/8 mile, were this the 1/4 I think the SVT would definitely pull ahead of several of them since it pulls it's best in the top-end.

yeah, it's against forum rules...

but let's just say I bench-raced a Mazda 6 wagon the other day. He bench-pulled very steadily on me in 5th bench-gear, but in the bench-corners he was unable to shake me off no matter what. I have SE, mind you.

Look of the guy who can't shake off a car worth 1/10 of his -- priceless.

1/8th would certainly be a no contest

I took on a 330ci convertible (automatic) at the local strip, and got about 1/2 car length in front and stayed there! The guy was pissed, and I was well surprised.
Hows that for being beat by a car 1/10th of the price.
Posted By: mmarfan_dup1 Re: Bench drag these cars... - 10/13/04 08:44 PM
2004 Nissan Altima 3.5L 265HP
2004 Audi A4 3.0L Quattro 220HP(AWD)
2004 Mazda 6 3.0L 220HP
2000 Contour SVT 200HP
2004 Acura TSX 200HP
2004 Lexus IS300 215HP (RWD - drivetrain loss)
2004 BMW 325i (w/ weakest motor- ~180HP)
2004 Jetta 1.8T 170HP

Closest guess that I can tell wise this is correct

The SVT and TSX would be VERY close

330 CIC (convertable) is pretty slow....especially with the auto trnas.

Even though they have 225HP, the fact of the automatic and the weight diffrence for being convertable, makes up for it.

Not that its a big difference but the 1.8T is 180HP 173TQ and if completely stock (and manual) both cars would be very even. In 2001 C&D got a 15.7 out of the 170Hp version so it would be pretty tight.

Below are all the 1/4 times and the year tested seems every car has pretty much identical times for the years listed.
Audi A4 - 2001 - 15.4 Manual
Mazda 6 - 2003 - 15.4 Manual (16.4 AT)
SVT Contour - 1999 - 15.4
Aucra TSX - 2004 - 15.5@90mph
Lexus IS300 - 2002 - 15.4 Manual trans
BMW 325i - 2001 - 15.4 Manual Trans
Jetta 1.8T -2001 - 15.7 Maunal

Hey I got my 6 to 14.9 bone stock , them C&D people can't drive!
Posted By: maxima96 Re: Bench drag these cars... - 10/18/04 12:34 AM
The altima has the VQ engine, its one of the best engines ever made with well over 200 horsepower it would take it. Now if there was a maxima then it would smoke them all.

keep in mind on an 8th mile youd be waiting for what seems like an eternity for the tour to open the other 12 valves

most of these other cars have power and tq from the get go

the bwm would be the only competition, maybe the vw... friend has a 1.8t runs regular, with 2 guys and a pile of fishign gear and it just pulls and pulls

nothing like the gtp thou
Posted By: ZX2 S/R Re: Bench drag these cars... - 10/18/04 05:37 PM
shoot i know that I can run with a IS300 till about 75-80mph and im about .2 behind where your cars should be
(assuming that if i drove a svt insted of my car at the track i would be running .2 faster, which i should)
