ill admit, thats impressive technology... But what happens when you have to have both of the clutches replaced?

Even some newer American ATX's have the capabliity to out shift a manual driver.

I think I'll live to see the day when manual transmissions are a thing of the past.

sadly.

Take the 5 sp auto in the Mazda 6. What a brilliant transmission, it shifts unlike any other car I have been in, you can hardly feel it shift, even at WOT, and its got 4 gears and an over drive, just like every other modern day 5 speed manual. it shifts right when I would shift in a 5 speed. Its basically a 5 speed manual without the 3rd pedal...

I sure hope not. I think there are too many die-hard manual fans to let 'em go by the wayside. I think we'll just see more and more cars coming with the option of F1-like transmissions.

Drive it back to back with a 5-speed manual Mazda6 and youll realize how much it actually sucks. The auto car is much more sluggish.

Wow. The 5-Speed Auto in the Mazda6 is widely regarded as an absolute piece of crap. It shifts unpredictably, very slowly, has the same jerky shifting that plagued Ford ATXs for years, has very poor reliability, and overheats so badly that transmission coolers are a must-have mod. Trade-Ins of 5-Speed Autos for the FAR superior 6-Speed Auto in '05+ Mazda6s were and still are common. In the transition from '04 to '05 when both 5-Speeds and 6-Speeds were on the lots, people were encouraged to go with the 6-Speed if they could get the price within $2000 or so partly because the 6-Speed is just so much better, partly because the 5-Speed sucked that bad.

The DSG will downshift when I tell it to. Alot of manumatics won't and it pisses me off. Also, in full auto mode the damn things shift halfway around a corner, I can't stand it. I'll never own an automatic in my life. As the DSG type systems become cheaper and appear in more vehicles I'll move to that as I get old and my knees turn into pudding.

DSG's are also amazingly fast. People say the 2006 M5 shifts fast, but it's nowhere near the speed of the DSG transmissions.

i disagree. I thought the Mazda 6 atx was absolutely terrible when i owned one. Very slow shifting. When shifting manually, if you shift at redline, you'll bounce off redline, just because it takes so long to shift. You pretty much have to shift 500 rpms before redline. The 3-1 shift is absolutely awful. If your coming up to a rolling stop and decide to go again, it takes forever to shift from 3rd to 1st. You might as well have an accident since you could be coasting out in traffic at this point. Once it finally does shift, you pretty much hit the steering wheel because it lurches forward. After driving the 6 and the Fusion, the atx in the Fusion is much better!
