Has anyone had this code before ?
I have a Duratec V6.
The Ford Service Manual says Camshaft Sensor Circuit A - Bank 1.
I have cleared the code TWICE, and it comes back in about 24 hours.

For all other purposes, the engine starts fine and drives fine.

Is there a way to CHECK the Camshaft Sensor, or is it inexpensive enough to replace?

Never had the problem, but the following might be able to help. It is from the Ford TSP (Technical Service Publication):

Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0340 indicates that Self-Test has detected a Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor circuit failure.

NOTE:
Refer to the Pinpoint Test «Schematic» at the beginning of the pinpoint test to determine the type of CMP sensor.

Possible causes:
-- CID circuit open.
-- CID circuit shorted to GND.
-- CID circuit shorted to PWR.
-- PWR GND open.
-- VPWR open.
-- Damaged CMP Sensor.
-- Damaged PCM.

* Start engine.
* Will the engine start?

Yes
GO to «DR2».

No
DTC P0340 is not the cause of the No Start. GO to «Section 4A» to diagnose the No Start symptom.

Section 4A has sections for the following:
- No Crank
- Hard Start/Long Crank and Erratic Start/Erratic Crank
- Stall After Start
- No Start/No Start

Call http://www.fordpartsonline (or another Ford parts discounter) for a quote on the sensor.

Hi,

It's Pete...

I was noticing that my posts were coming up as PRomano instead of RoadRunner, and I don't know why...

But anyway...

I read what you posted in the FORD Service Manual, but the car runs fine.
I have no problems starting it.
The problem started after a car wash.

I connected Alex Pepper's OBD-II scanner and cleared the code.
I also unplugged and plugged the harness to the sensor,
and so far, no light...

Maybe it was just a little oxidation ???

And for those of you who just wanted to know....
Alex's software works with Diablo Chips...

If the car starts fine, then the next step from the Ford TSP is as follows:

Complete PCM Reset to clear DTCs.

- Start engine.
- Increase rpm to greater than 1500 rpm for 10 seconds. Repeat two times.
- Key off.
- Retrieve all Continuous Memory DTCs.
- Is DTC P0340 present?

Yes
GO to «DR3».

No
The fault that produced DTC P0340 is intermittent. GO to Pinpoint Test Step «Z1» with the following data: List of Possible Causes.

Remember to clear DTCs before you run the test.

Try a little dielectric grease on the connector terminals. If you have a little oxidation on them that is giving bad readings, that should help clear it up for less than $1.

I had the same thing after a rainy week. I cleared the code twice and it hasn't come back in over a year. All throughout the car started/ran fine.
