I can't belive my ears when I heard my dealer quoted me $1400 to have a new clutch intalled, checked out some independent garages only couple hundre cheaper,I wonder is it the avage price for today FWD cars? BWT any how to on clutch.
I got my clutch replaced about two years ago and was about $1300 at the dealer. He said that it was the second most expensive clutch that Ford made (second to the taurus SHO). Has something to do with how much stuff has to be dropped to even get at the tranny.

I paid the $1400 from Ford because I get a 12 month, 12000 mile warranty that is good at any ford dealer. I also got a free tub of lube too . I paid for a large amount of service on a car once at a small repair place, and the place went out of business not too long after.
It took 17 hours to do my clutch. 3 hours to pull off the turbo kit, and 3 hours to put it back on. That leaves 11 hours to pull the trans, install the diff and clutch, then re assemble. Multiply that by your garage rate and add in parts.

Dealer shop rate - 11 hours x $100ish = 1100 + parts.
Garage shop rate - 11 hours x $70ish = 770 + parts.

$400 Canadian for a performance clutch kit + 7 hours later of bloody self labour = brand new clutch in my Contour. It was fun to do too.
That seems kinda high to me. When I was going to have the spec clutch I bought installed the Ford stealership here quoted me $800 for the swap. Clutch cost me $340 I think (was a Stage II) so that's quite a bit cheaper. How much are they charging you for the clutch and how much is labor? If it's more than $300 or so you might be better off getting with one of the Spec vendors on here (SVTCuervo or FlechAutoSports IIRC sell them) and getting a Spec Stage I.

BTW I did find a local shop that quoted me $700 for labor. The Ford manual lists a clutch swap at I believe 10 hours.
I bought the spec stage three ceramic (429 notes) and paid a local transmiision repair shop here in oklahoma around $675...That covered Installation, a couple of exhaust bolts that had seized and had to be cut off and replaced and 4 qts of Mercon Five Synthetic Tranny Fluid...Along with the cost of the clutch assembly with shipping it totaled right around 1200 dollars...If i had it to do over i would have gone with the Stage three Kevlar as opposed to the Stage three Ceramic...
I paid $450 labor to get a new clutch AND ENGINE put in. Clutch was $200, brand new OEM. I know you have to pull the engine anyway, but swapping engines HAS to require more work.
on my old 66 mustang, had it since new, the clutch had to be replaced.. jacked it up and pulled out trans. removed bellhousing, clutch, cost of parts. about $40 tops.. and put it in... two hours later was driving around with it in and no problems.... kinda hurts knowing that the old rear wheel drive cars are a goner as its cheaper to put in the side drive engines when putting the cars together... and you know they dont care how hard it is to service....
