This may be an odd question. Does anybody else have a black SVT nameplate on their engine? Every other picture I have seen of a SVT motor has a red nameplate.

That's off something else.

thats awesome!
Posted By: spdsk8r Re: SVT Engine nameplate? - 12/14/05 04:34 PM
It's as it came from the factory. I bought from original owner.
Posted By: ElKy Re: SVT Engine nameplate? - 12/14/05 04:44 PM
right, but i think what tod means is it was probably used on another SVT model prior to the Contour.
since yours is such a low build number it would be very likely that ford would do that. and then eventually they came up with the new badge.

Kinda how in the 98 SVT Contour promo video, the car has mystique tails and a pre-98 center console.

You have a rare one if that's what came on the car for sure. What does Goonzs' look like?

No other SVT product has the type of 'SVT' badge our engine does.....

Goonz had the same thing but he replaced it not knowing what he had. This came up a few weeks ago. The black plates were from the very first runs. My original car, #173 built 4/4/97 IIRC, however had the red badge so it changed before then.

The one in the video has that engine badge too. Black.

FINALLY!!!! Someone beat Goonz!!

Don't change that plate. Extremely rare.
Posted By: Goonz SVT Re: SVT Engine nameplate? - 12/14/05 06:19 PM
when I first purchased my car, I had that..but after joing CEG and seeing everyone have the red ones, I put on the newer one throwing the black on away not realizing at the time that I had the #9 car..sucked being a newb

I should try to find that black badge and put it back on

Yeah, you wanted to be cool like everyone else before you realized you were cooler than everyone else.

Now spdsk8r has the cool guy SVT, and I'm still left way out near the middle where nobody loves me

...well, except the MEG guys

EDIT: you know that this means that Nov 12th may have been when #1 rolled off the line...

OH, and spdsk8r... do you have traction control?

they wouldnt crash test the svt would they? i mean the saftey features are the same as on the standard contour... so there would be no need to.

IIRC the first 30 SVT's were hand inspected and detailed for possible car shows and press photo duty.

There were a few write ups about it in the old archives. Well if they are still there even???

The engine bay is a lot cleaner than when I bought it a couple of months ago. Remember, this is Michigan and it's my daily driver. It will get the full detail cleaning this spring. It does not have Traction Control or a Sunroof, and according to SVT was provided to the journalists for magazine reviews.
This is my summer fun vehicle:

Posted By: NVMYSVT Re: SVT Engine nameplate? - 12/15/05 12:15 PM
holy crap... your 98 was built in 96??? thats insane.. usually they make a new model year the prior year of a release..

IE mine was built in 97 but its a 98 and my 99 Coug was built and bought in 98 as well.

Sunroof, CD player, and spoiler were optional. The only options, actually, and when they became no-charge options in later SVTs you began to see a lot more with them.

not so strange..i thnk we have at least one SVT in NE with no sunroof, maybe more.
I think it was/is owned by Pat.

AFAIK, spoilers were not even an option until 99. SVT wanted to keep the car with a more streamline look.

Me neither
Posted By: CSVT#49 Re: SVT Engine nameplate? - 12/15/05 06:50 PM
Yea I do not have a sunroof either. I had the red badge on my engine as well. So they switched somewhere before mine, which puts it in the first 48 cars built. I replaced my SVT badge with one off of a FSVT. I think it looks better.

I don't have a sun roof either.

Also, the spoiler was not a factory option until 2000. There were a few that were dealer installed prior to that.

Actually it became a dealer installed option in 1999. It was never a true "factory" option on any year. Even in 2000 it was dealer installed. They came in the trunk if so ordered just like in 99.

Sunroofs were not offered on E0 98's.
If an E0 has one it was a dealer or aftermarket unit.
I'm not entirely positive if it was even a factory option on E1 98.5's.
However by 99 it was a no-cost option from the factory.

My sunroof is definately factory, and I believe my car is an E0 (#3780). Do we know when they changed from E0 to E1?
Posted By: ElKy Re: SVT Engine nameplate? - 12/15/05 07:39 PM
mine is an E0 and the sunroof is factory.

My understanding is that the first E1 was built on the first workday or February 1998. I also remember (but don't know for sure) that the last E0 was a few months before.
