my dad took his 2000 SE (before he gave it to me) in to the shop to get the fan blower replaced and found that the whole dash had to be replaced because it had been recalled. is this true? why would the whole dash need to be replaced?

I believe there is a problem with the dash that causes them to warp. Try a search on warp dash in the problems forum and you should find more info.
