I appreciate the troubleshooting help given in another thread, very much.
Let me describe the symptoms and then the solution, briefly. The turn signals began working for just a few blinks and then would stop. Later on, the four way emergency flashers quit altogether.

Using the advice given here; I removed the two phillips screws on the top half of the cover around the steering wheel column. The cover then slid out without too much difficulty. The entire switch mechanism can then be removed by releasing a tab on the top of the assembly, gently sliding it upwards.

The bad device was the electronic flasher (relay) which was readily available at Autozone for $10.
For my 1998 SE Sport, the new part was - - "FL35" for the three pin flasher. Most Contour / Mystique models are probably the same.
I put in the new flasher and the problem was fixed. Thanks to this CEG Forum for the help.

I just did this, as well, and it was probably the easiest repair I have done on the Contour. You don't even have to unplug any wires. You pull the bad relay, insert the new one, and you're good.

I have become accustomed to the sound the oem relay made. This new one sounds a little different, and will take some getting used to, but for $10 it's hard to beat.
