Hey Folks,

Just wanted to post that I found out the solution to my transmission slipping intermittently. After some thorough searching and replacing of numerous parts it turned out to be the Range Solenoid. (at least that's what my transmission guy said it was) I will explain what the car was doing so that others can identify if it is their problem aswell.
The car ran fine in and around the city. Once it was warm and only after I got on the highway the car would surge and jerk fairly violently. After it begins to surge it would continue until I pulled over and let the car completely cool down. By slip I mean the engine would rev and the car would not go faster, until it reengaged and then a clunk followed byu normal operation.

Anyway the transmission guy had the car on the scanner for about an hour before a fault came up. Because it was an intermittent fault it was not being stored. It was about a $200 fix. (Canadian) I just thought that this is a place for others to start as this seems to be a fairly common problem in contours.

Good luck to all and thanks for all the help!

I suspect that is the transmission range sensor. Also know as MLPS (manual lever position sensor). It tells the computer what gear you have selected. As these sensors age the lubricating grease internal to the sensor eventually migrates into contacts and mildly short them so that sometimes you get flaky readings.

The MLPS mounts on the trans where the shift cable attaches. Before transmissions were computer controlled, a similar switch was known as the neutral safety switch.
