Ok I got a HMS fully built tranny and for some reason the torsen dif i have in it just completily took a dump and locked up. So I talked to terry and he wants me to ship my hole tranny to look at it for free and then to replace the dif if thats the only thing messed up. Which just the diff installl aftr shipping and all is probably going to be at or over 1000$. Sooo i was thinking about just installing a new torsen my self cause i REALLY dont have the money for that and i know therese nothing wrong with the tranny it self. So my question is since it already had a torsen and the preloads set, if i buy a new torsen and bearing should it just drop in with out having to reshim it for the preload?

some might have been that lucky but it should always be measured and checked per spec while being installed.

The preload is set by the shim that is behind the race in the bellhousing side of the transmission. You basically have to put the stock shim in, reassemble the tranny and check the turning torque of the input shaft. Then you need to either increase or decrease the shim size based on the result. The turning torque (of the input shaft) is supposed to be no greater than 1nm with 4th gear engaged. You will need a 20mm spline drive socket to check (iirc the size corectly). Hopefully this sheds some light but basically you have to research it yourself till you feel confident. The actual preload is supposed to be between 20-30 lbs, again iirc. You need a lot of specialized tools do this the 100% correct way.

Taper bearings need correct preload to ensure the roller bearings are actually spinning themselves. Too much preload and they will not spin, but slide, and premature wear on the races.

Im not replacing bearings on the input shaft. Just replacing the dif and a new bearing. Which i was going by this video

All though its kind of confusing cause he says put the race in but not all the way then assemble and check the gap with a feeler gauge then neasure the shim subtract the two numbers and thats the preload of the taper bearing on the diff. Now the confusing part is he says dont pout the race all the way in. Well how the hell do i know how far to put it in to check the gap?? Of does the bearing push the race in when you bolt it back to gether and then you get the right sime to fill the gap that gives it the correct preload?

I think you should pay to have this done. PM livinsvt he'll give you a better deal.

Not trying to be a ass and i appreciate the suggestion but im trying to do this my self. If you know the correct way and want to give me some insite great. But if you know the correct way and youre worried about me screwing my stuff up please dont cause its my stuff and if i screw it up then its my bad. Live and learn but please dont insinuate im not compotent enough to do it when you dont know me or just cause im asking the correct way to figure the preload out cause the vid was a little conffusing. Hell if i could find someone to walking me through on completely puling my old tranny apart , not hms tranny, just to try/kearn how to rebuild it i would. I just like doing things my self and like i said right now just aint got hte money to pay people.Anyway thanks for the replies

Sorry to jack but does anyone have a spare trans with an lsd for sale or just an lsd? I blew my diff and am trying to locate one..

Sorry, I should have elaborated . If you call around to some small transmission shops and explain you have the tranny off the car and all the parts needed (diff bearings/races, speedo gear, axle seals) to install the diff you might be able to find a reasonable rate maybe more in your price range ($200iish?). I installed mine, time was not really factor either and it was still a major headache. I am alllll about doing stuff on your own and not paying other people, and I had the same attitude of if I screw it up its a learning expierence but the further I got the more I wished I just spent time finding someone who does it for a living to do it as a sidejob for short money. I am really not saying your not competent or anything like that, I was just in the exact same situation basically. I spent a lot of time on google searching for failed lsd installs (lol) to see where people went wrong (with most any fwd car, not just mtx75), some peoples ring gear bolts ended up backing out hence destroying gears. Set preload incorrecly and your bearings will end up howelling. Heat the ring gear at 200*F for a few minutes before installing so you can line it up easily. If you replace the axle seals but motorcraft I got them at the dealership for half than parts store's cost and they are twice the quality.

Tousley ford sells Torsens for $530. Buy the bearings and seals while you have them on the phone.

There's a pre98 diff for sale in the classifieds from 2000ZxT. That won't break on you. Unless he sold it already, but I'm too lazy to look right now as I'm already responding.

That's cool I understand now. But mr Jains him self said he would walk me through it if I wanted to try it my self. Which is really nice an considerate of considering I didn't even ask. He just read this post. An yeah I always call the dealer to get a price also cause slot of times they are the same price or cheaper than a part store but people never check cause they think deal will always be more!
