Finally got the car running this past week!

It's been sitting in my garage with a busted transmission for about 4 years now, and I just got around to buying another one and getting it bolted up last Saturday.

Then it wouldn't start; I guess a near-empty tank, after 4 years, yields some pretty nasty stuff. I dumped in a couple of gallons of Premium and a bottle of STP gas treatment, and let it sit for a couple of days. Monday evening it finally started!

So now I can actually start DOING stuff to it. Things like buffing the clearcoat, removing the pinstripes from the non-original doors, re-painting the cladding, and freshening up the suspension.

Eventually I want to upgrade to some Focus SVT's or E1's, instead of the 14" phone-dials, and get this thing into some autocross. It'll be my winter car for the time being, so I can stop plowing snow with the Roush, LOL.

I've just drove it around my neighborhood so far; I don't have tags or insurance for it yet. Hope to remedy that within a week or so.

i like it! always have liked those...I wouldve bought one but the guy said it wasnt a great first car...and I ended up with a contour :D

I can't really figure out why, but I've always had a thing for that car.

Oh, and the Cougar looks good as always.

I take it's a manual? the orignal T9 tranny? And whats ur plans with it? I'd say go all out and put whatever cosworth kit u like on it?

Ha! Thanks. Maybe now I can actually keep some paint on the front valence for a little while :)

It is a manual, and I did just put a T9 back in there. Depending on how things go, I would like to drop a T5 in it eventually. I just didn't want to do all that extra work with the new crossmember and drive shaft until I was sure it was going to run and drive OK.

So plans-wise, I don't have a lot yet. Like I said, it has a lot of "neglect" bugs that need attention, so for the time being, I just want to get it back up to good running order. Then if the budget would permit, it would do a T5 swap, turbo upgrade, intercooler, upgraded suspension, Cosworth grille, and LSD.

But in all seriousness, I've got one money pit already, so the XR will probably just end up being a solid daily.

Have always liked these, my dad had one for his demo back in the day. Besides his Merkur Scorpio and 90' supercharged cougar, this was my favorite demo of his.

Gawwwd XR4Ti's are soo hideous that i want one! One of my friends has one that he's trying to get back together but i'm not sure if it'll ever be done. There's another guy around here (my town) that has a near mind condition one thats all white, looks good but it's not really all that fast.

Yeah, they are rated about the same as a stock Duratec Cougar/Contour, with a little more torque. But they are RWD, so you got that going for ya... which is nice. And the turbo is just a nice bonus for upgrading.

drift it

looks clean at least, with a little exhaust work and intake i bet it would be pretty fun to drive

yes the manual tranny Xr4ti's was rated at 175 hp and and 200 tq!! but the higest rated 2.3 turbo of the lates 80's was the 85.5 SVO mustang with like 240 HP I'm sure. And I'd do cossie lights aslo, they are a big improvment over the normal xr lights!!!

Highest rating for the SVO was 200 or 205 (depending on where you look).

Anyway, I'm jealous, I want another XR now. I've had 4 of them so far. One of which ran a 15.6 in basically stock form, on crappy OEM focus tires, lol.

I think I need to sell the M3 for real now, so I can get a regular cheap DD, and a cheap toy too. . .

sweeet!! I have a set of E1's i will let go for a good price, if interested.

Thanks, man; I'll get back to you when I'm ready to cross that bridge!

I actually bought a set right after I got the car, and sold them after a couple of years because they were just taking up too much room in my garage :blackeye:
