So I've been thinking about picking up a second vehicle because, as of next year I will finally allowed to have a car on campus. Problem is, 85% of the students @ my school straight up cannot park and drive. Most of them can't safely cross streets.

And possibly a year and a half from now I will be on Penn State main campus meaning I will have a car out in a bigger populated school.

I don't want to take my 'tour to either school seeing how people act/drive.

So any complaints about a '00 Taurus FFV 3.0 Vulcan? Besides the not being the Duratec :-p

I looked online and can't really find any sites that are red flagging problems with the car.

Thanks in advance.

Simple, crappy gas mileage! I'd trade it for a Foci in a heartbeat simple for gas mileage.

I'll second the reliability vote. My 96 Aerostar has a 3.0 Vulcan in it. I have 125,000 on it, doesn't burn oil, runs better than it did brand new.

Good engine.

The 3.0 vulcan while nothing fancy is a strong reliable little motor. My inlaws have had 3 taurus's all with vulcans. My inlaws travel alot to virginia and fla and work. the 94 they had over 225,000 miles w/o major issues, the tranny finally gave out. Then they got a 2000 taurus put over 160,000 on it but the car got hit and totalled. The current 2005 taurus is geting up in miles but still going. They have had such good luck with them they never tried buying something else. They where bumming when ford killed the taurus.

My 96 sable has the vulcan also and runs great, it only has 85,000 miles though.

I had a feeling price of said vehicle would be a factor and at the price it is.

haha of course

If I had 3-5k to buy another car I would definately get another contour or a 4x4.

hmm I'm gonna give into more detail and want to see what you guys think.

Car as it stands:
-Couple bought it with ~70k from a "wholesale" dealer who was selling off "rental" cars for a company. Validity of that can be confirmed from a car fax. I pm'ed the member doing carfaxes right now.
-Clock is now 143K
-She drives it to where she works, about 7 miles down the road. All straight road no lights/turns.
-She told me that they used it to drive to cape cod. Not how many times or if it made it. lol But she mentioned they were empty nester's and that they do some traveling. So Sounds like the car had alot of travel miles.
-Car has a brand new waterpump. Its the cleanest thing in the motorbay, and its a damn clean waterpump. lol
-Found receipt in the glovebox for sparkplugs in 03'. They were Bosch plat 4.
-Supposedly the waterpump that was put on leaks...I didn't/couldn't see any signs of the pump leaking, but she showed me a stain on the floor from where it had dripped. Problem is that coolant/coolant overflow house/waterpump are all in the same spot.
-Has two minor comestic spots, but body does not look repainted and headlights are identical. Doors all lined up along with hood and trunk.
-Brand freakin new goodyear triple assurance tires. (don't ask me why on a taurus, but they are new and look sweet)
-Interior is pretty clean, but it has a tape deck...This taurus actually has a bench style seat upfront with no console on the floor. Column shifter FTW! lol
-It was raining so we were in their garage. Car started fine. Actually took off probably better then my 'tour. It had a high idle that dropped within 10 seconds.
-Put it in gear and just drove it back out and back into garage. Trans seemed to go in fine. Motor jumped when it went into gear. So not sure on that one.

The Kicker (imagine peoples honestity!):
-The worst thing I know about the car is that The wife who was there on friday told us her husband uses "amco" or "ammico" (am-me-co) oil and that is a 25000(yes) mile oil. :troutslap: The oil in the car looked like it needed to be replaced. I've seen worse, but if it was my car it would have been changed before now.
-When I was under looking for coolant leaks, The oil pan it coated with oil. I mean every corner of the pan casting was gunked. It was still pretty tacky, and for a 143K motor i'm sure it leaks somewhere. It looks like my 'tour when the filter needed a quarter more turn and was slowly dripping oil. And looking at the drips and coating I think It might be the same problem. And if the oil gets changed every 25k (:blackeye:) A leaky filter would look like that I saw.

Remember this as well, a Vulcan 3.0 is everywhere. It the motor/trans crapped replacement used would be like 300-500 bucks for both around where I live.

She didn't know what the oil was. Those were direct quotes from her. I just thought it was funny she said the oil goes for 25k. Anything in a car that long of a time, should probably be changed by then...

Any opinion on the oil? I didn't know there was an oil that was suppose to go that long.

There are a few high change interval oils, but almost all recommend changing the filter at the halfway point.
