a very long time ago, possibly around 1999, i cant remember exactly, i dropped off an engine block, crank, pistons, and rods at a machine shop.
it was a chevy 350 4-bolt main i wanted to put in my El Camino.
well, being in school and then working and life and stuff, it went forgotten.
about 5 years ago i contacted the shop, the guy still had it. it had been balanced, bored, and honed, and was waiting to be decked and assembled. I dropped off the rings and bearings so he could assemble the lower end and install the cam bearings. he told me he would contact me when it was done. never heard from him and i forgot about it again.
after this weekend i decided to give him a call.
his answering machine said that he now worked out of another shop, so i called there.
i told him that i had dropped off everything years ago and was wondering if he might have it still.
he asked "is this mike gluck?"
i told him yup.
he still has it!!!!
he said he never got around to decking it or assembling it, but he will start diggin everything out this week.
so hopefully within the next month or so i will have a fresh motor to play with.
its either gonna kick my arse in gear on my El Camino, or go into another project, but it will be nice just to have it back

today has been a day full of good news, yay!

Great that he remembered you. Also cool that he's not going to charge you 10 years of storage or whatever it is.

now i just have to find an electric oven so i can start powder coating everything for it!
haha

mmmm el camino....absolutely a car that I will have when I'm an adult and able to pile up cars on my front lawn to bring my neighbors property value down.

take digital pictures of the photos
Obviously the quality won't be that great, but it'll still get the point across. :)

If I only had a scanner that worked , I'd make Elky drool w/pics of my old '68 'Camino (they're all on 35mm) ...

I should've kept that mofo

yeah..do what she said..she so smare!!!

he still has it!!!!

did you pay the man for any of the work he did, or was this a kind of good faith thing?

people do stuff like this all the time to me. they bring in computers that you'd think their lives depended on the way they're freaking out about them - and then never come back for them, or even return calls!

At one point i probably had about 20 unclaimed machines. I had to make up a disclaimer to put up on the wall that after 60 days the computer is ours cause I don't have room for them all. Works out ok for my friends and family...hell even I had a few "used" computers for myself over the years. I always wait about 90 days anyway because occasionally someone will come back for it, but yeah...insanity.

i had paid him about $250 for the bore, hone, and balance.

he said that he knew i wasn't going to desert it because i gave him everything.
if anyone deserts stuff like that, they usually only drop off the block.

Probably will need at least a good hone job again. I can't imagine that it didn't get a little surface rust or oxidation from sitting so long.
