I was just up at a local garage getting a quote for new struts, strut mounts, sway bar links and sway bar bushings. The guy was telling me that svt and non-svt struts are the same. Are they? I dont want these guys putting wrong parts on my car. Why would my struts say "svt" on them if they are the same as non-svt vehicles?

btw, $2300 for the wholething ... ouch

holy ****!!! your not going to pay that much are you??? you could buy a used tour at that price.
yes,the valving of them is different. otherwise they're the same. why not get the bat strut/spring kit for 500 or what ever they go for now.

That is correct. Do not go there and have them change it out. Get a nice aftermarket kit and go to a reputable private shop.

From memory, I believe that the damping is a bit different, and I agree with your line of reasoning that there would be no need for SVT struts to be labeled as such if they were the same.

Give a call up to Steve at Tousley Ford -- see if he can get you a line on some. Should be about $400 for the set at 10% over cost, with fronts being more expensive than rears.

I think $2300 for the whole kit 'n kaboodle is heavy money -- my BS detector is going off. End links and bar bushings are cheap parts, and the installation is no big deal. Doing strut mounts takes some time, but I can't see them charging you more than $400 labor for everything you're having done. Since the parts involved total about $1000, you're getting hosed somewhere.

please note that SVT struts are no longer different then non-svt struts, I do believe the parts numbers are the same now.

Did Ford just end up consolidating parts/numbers after the discontinuation of SVT struts?

No less, some dealers out there may still have old stock if you want to go with the originals -- you may be able to have them search the computer for you.

most likely consolidated the numbers, don't forget the E0's had the same front struts, it was only later that the fronts where changed. rears are all the same

the labor shouldnt be more than 6 hours. i mean,to do the sturt mounts wont cost anymore really because they come out w/the sturts...which your replacing anyways:shrug:

after having them look at the car they now say all 4 struts, all 4 strut mounts, and the front sway bar links are all that need replacing. So i can pass on the rear link and bunshing and thr front bushings for now.

front struts- 146 each + 85 each for labor
rear struts- 163 each + 85 each for labor
front strut mounts- 128 each + 25 each for labor
rear strut mounts- 142 each + 25 each for labor
front sway bar links- 63 each + 38 each for labor
alignment- 70

total of about 2050
they offered us 10% off
so new total about 1825, yikes

i'd really like to go with the BAT kit and the bat strut mounts and links because they are cheaper and probably better parts. i just worry that they might not want to put them on since they are not their parts. Last time i took thi approach with a fuel pump they swore it didnt fit and i had to buy the motorcraft part that was almot 3x as expensive cause they swore it didnt fit.and on top of that i coulddnt return the original one. I really just dont want this kind of headache again.

buy the parts, supply me w/a heated garage and i'll do it for you....for ALOT less. i hate to see garage's burn people after personally working at one:blackeye:

wow what a great offer!

Cody, as one who as let a fellow CEG work on his car I say you should take 95pgt up on his offer. I know I saved a bunch of money and got better and more thorough work then what a shop would have done.

I've read bunches of 95pgt's posts. I would be confident that he knows what he is doing. Grab a wrench and help him do it, so you learn about your car as well!

Win Win!

and by alot less,i mean not much at all. i'm laid off for the winter so i have alot of spare time till i go back to work april 12th.
dont let the post count and join date fool you. i've been a member here since mid 02',my screenname didnt make the old to new forum switch 8-/
i've done everything from front end conversions, engine and interior swaps, suspension multiple times...although the contour and taurus style setup isnt the easiest(compared to mazdas) its still doable by the at -homer.

thanks for the generous offer. I'm tempted to take you up on it. Problem is, I don't have a garage (i just rent a place at school) and i have very little tools (just some wrenches, screwdrivers, and ratchet sets). So i dunno if we'd be able to do it.

You could use my garage... I'm in Saratoga, about 30 minutes north of Albany. It's about a 3 hour drive from New Brunswick, NJ. 1 1/2 hrs from Oneonta. You could always meet 95pgt-t in Albany and drive up in just the one car. The drive time is identical between NJ and Saratoga/Oneonta.
