Can a slipping clutc cause a car to not pass emissions?? My thought would be to get to the mph that they want to test the car at the rpms would be higher than if it was not slipping therefore producing more emissions? Help please I want to pull the trans to do the clutch but I kinda want to know if the car will even pass smog before I do that lol:confused:

personally that makes no sense to me. either the engine is running right and the emission system is working correctly or it isn't.

also you need to determine how emissions testing is done in your area/state. most state just plug into the OBDII system and run a test that way, so there will not be tested on the rollers. hence a slipping clutch isn't going to matter.

Well we are tested on runners and you havE to meet certain standards at certain speeds and rpms... anyone from cali know about this?

my thought on this... if your clutch is slipping to a point where the motor is revving much higher than it should be at certain speeds, then it probably wont pass emission, because it will be revving higher then normal and consuming more fuel, thus putting out more "emissions"

I might totally be wrong, I have never done an emissions test, ever.

If your car runs right and has no CEL on, then you more than likely will pass emissions, provided it doesn't have any massive exhaust leaks, put a clutch in the thing.

Ok thats exactly what i was thinking but you put it way better than i could!!!!! Thanks a ton...but can anyone confirm this? lol

Your clutch would really need to be toast in order to constantly slip. They accelerate car on rollers until it reaches test speed. They let car stabilize at speed first before taking readings from exhaust sniffer so clutch wouldn't still be slipping, probably just slip under acceleration reaching speed.

I would say you should be ok and worth the $40 to try. I just passed CA emissions last week on my daughters Contour. Had both P420 &P430 CEL codes for the last 2 years. Previous owner got quoted $900 for new pre-cats by Ford dealer. I spent $6 and installed the anti-foulers, codes cleared on their own and been away for 3,000 miles + and passed CA smog with flying colors.

I agree with Silver Bullet. The clutch would need to be undrivable to slip so much as to mess up an emissions test.

Further, the test results is in either percent or parts per million depending on which gas you are reading. A slightly higher revving engine would probably be slightly cleaner. At least that is my opinion as a former California smog tech (but many years ago).

What are these $6 anti Foulers?? My car had stored PO420 and PO430... so if those pop up again these seem useful!!! Thanks a ton for the help!

If you go to NAPA, they have Spark Plug Anti-Foulers. It's basically a steel tube that you thread an O2 sensor into and then thread into the bung. It basically pulls it out of the direct air stream.
