I'm replacing a timing belt that snapped on a 99 2.0 Contour. I'm having trouble removing the serpentine belt crankshaft pulley sprocket. I have the bolt out but the pulley seems stuck to the shaft. I can rock it a bit but can't get it to pop off. Do you need a puller to remove it? Thanks for any help.

I used a puller to get my stock one off. To get my UDP off, i used pry bars. Either way will work, just dont nick up the ribs on the pulley and make sure you line up the key way and start the bolt straight. Makes for a hell of a mess if you dont ( i know first hand).

Thanks for the reply. I found an old 3 jaw puller I had and managed to cram in their. That did the trick. I wonder why they didn't tap the wholes in the pulley so you can use a threaded puller?

you dont NEED the threaded puller for the Zetec crank pulley. you can usually get a pair of prybars behind it and rock it back and forth until it comes off. that said, I have seen some that have been really stuck on and the threaded puller would have made it so much easier to remove.

The pulley on this one did rock a tiny bit but not enough to walk it off. I tried to pry a little from the back but I really didn't want to damage anything. This is my first time wrenching on a Zetec so I'm a little couscous. Anyway I got it off and have it all apart now down to the belt. Turns out the lower idler pulley self disintegrated. All that was left were the 2 metal bands that hold the bearings. Bits of plastic and ball bearings everywhere. The last job for the night was to set up the variable exhaust cam. The how to on this site is very good I hope I get it right the first time it's really cold here.

Got the belt on last night. Their is no way I can squeeze my hand in to insert the crankshaft locking pin in without removing the cat. I set up the timing with the key way facing straight up. I believe the crank turns 2 revolutions for every 1 revolution of the camshafts. Does it matter on which of the 2 revolutions you set the key way straight up? Or am I good to go as long as the key way is straight up and the cam locking bar is in Place.

Fat hands? It is a real bugger but with a long combination 10mm wrench you can do it, gotta go in from underneath the car though.

Long combo wrench set is on my wish list and yeah my hands are a little big. I've been trying to do this almost outside. I just have some shelter from the wind. Well doing it with the key way straight up works - car is running. Tomorrow I'll finish it and test drive it. If the car runs OK I'll probably go over it again in the spring with the crank pin and make sure it %100.
