Ok guys my 98csvt idles rough and was told it had a #6 cyl misfire when I bought it. My question is the other day i was under the hood and notice that the positive side battery cable is fried and looking at the wires on the harness and noticed alot of them were cracked. Could this be my issue. Any advice would be awsome. Thanks guys.

Fix the cables to be sure, but I doubt that is your problem. Have you addressed the #6 misfire you wre told about? Clean your battery terminals/cables and coat them liberally with petrolium jelly. Look at your spark plugs and cables. Clean, gap and check the cable connections. Do you have a CEL? If so, AutoZone will read your codes for free.:)

The CEL light is on and flashing. haven't had it checked out yet. I'm changing the plugs soon.

I don't agree with the petroleum jelly. Will just attract a lot of dirt. Inspect and re-wrap wires as needed with electrical tape to prevent shorts.

I've been using petroleum jelly for more than 30 years now and I have never had a problem with dirt or corrosion. But that's me... do what you want.

have you checked to make sure that the isn't any oil in the #6 plug well? this can cause a misfire.

i also disagree with the petroleum jelly. if you have a good battery and clean terminals and cables that haven't corroded then you shouldn't have a need for anything to "protect" your terminals or cables. if you are having a problem with corrosion on your battery then probably the seal around the battery terminal has or is starting to fail. this in turn is releasing the gas that builds inside the battery due to the heat cycle that it goes through when you use your car. this gas mixed with the two different types of metal that make up the battery terminal and cable (lead and copper) is what causes your battery to corrode.

OK... I'm nearly 50 years old. I have owned a lot of vehicles and have always used petroleum jelly. I have never had a problem with corrosion nor has anyone I have ever known that also uses petroleum jelly. My batteries have always lasted at least five years and usually six or more, even in extremely cold weather. In addition, every battery I have ever seen in someone else's car that does not use some kind of protectant, has corroded terminals and cables. In my experience, petroleum jelly is superior to other types of battery protectants that do attract dirt and get all over everything. As I said before, do what you want... that is my opinion.:blackeye:

Clean your battery terminals/cables and coat them liberally with petrolium jelly. Look at your spark plugs and cables.

Based on your other posts, your original statement now makes sense to me. You are advising to coat JUST the battery terminal connection with petrolium jelly. My original read thought you were suggesting coating larger sections of wire with the stuff. So, in my mind, i thougth you had sticky dirt-hungry petrolium jelly all over wires under there.

:laugh:lol. No, definately not. Just the terminals and where the cables clamp to the terminals.
