Rear tail light issues...

I have a 98 Contour GL, and the right, rear brake, backup, and blinker do not work. But the parking light works. I have changed the bulb, fuse, and bulb socket with no success. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has this happened to anyone else? (Oh and I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the socket)

Start searching this forum (and the old forums, be sure to select your specific forum to search, and set the date range to "all) for "multifunction switch, or "MFS"

This may likely prove to be your problem.

Thank you Tony, I also forgot to mention that I have had the problem for about 2 years now and had the turn signal switch (like most of those old posts suggested) replaced a year ago started working for a while then died again. I guess I will just have to keep buying them. Is there some sort of manufacturers defect with the lights?

You are probably the one and only one to have deal with this more than once. My car will be 11 years old next month and the MFS is still working fine. Low miles (110K) for an 11 year old car.

I have read that sometimes the MFS can wear out faster when you hold the stalk "in between on and off" and the lights go on the "fritz". Have you done that recently?
