Pending P0340 DTC

Alright here is a puzzling situation. I was driving my 99 SVT today trying to source the cause of an annoying P0420, while driving I had my scanner hooked up to monitor the O2's. While doing this I noticed a pending code for P0340 (cam shaft sensor) and thought . I completed a few drive cycles over long distances and with time in between and each time the scanner showed a pending P0340 but the ECU never stored the code or turned on the CEL. My understanding was that if the same code repeated in consecutive drive cycles the CEL would be illuminated, is this incorrect?

Had a Focus with a known really bad missing idle, big hole leaking in PCV inlet at intake manifold juncture. Still only showed "pending" code, never did become firm. No CEL, O2 sensor at lean limit, no switching at all at idle, engine ran crappy for quite a while, it should have set a code. I think response to set hard faults has been damped somewhat to trim back on false alarms and whining customers to dealers. Try wiping it and see if reappears, if so I treat it as hard fault. Wouldn't come up unless PCM sees something wrong, at least for a little bit.

Check wiring and connector. If both are fine, then the camshaft position sensor is about to go.

I cleaned the sensor last night and checked the connections, the pending code did not reappear today, but I will keep my eye on it.
