My car, a '97 mystique has been showing a P0455 code which states that it is an "Evaporative Emission Control System leak Detected(gross leak)". Does anyone else have any experience with this issue?

P0455 code indicates that the EVAP Running Loss Monitor attempted to pull a vacuum on the fuel system but was unable to do so.

Possible causes include a loose/non-sealing/defective fuel cap, faulty canister vent solenoid (stuck up), faulty purge solenoid (not opening), a leaking hose/connection anywhere in the EVAP system, faulty fuel tank pressure sensor, PCM fault, wiring fault, etc......

Since the fuel cap is the easiest to check, inspect it and the filler neck to see if to appears to be sealing properly. Swap the cap and see if the code comes back after a reset.

Thanks for the reply Steve. I was hopinvg that others have had more experience with this. I'm pretty sure the gas cap is ok. A major thing that we notice is that when we have a full tank there is a strong gas odor from the car, but never any puddles under the car (at least gas). So I'm thinking I have a bad vent return line or something. I don't see any bad lines exposed though.

Most of the vent lines are not visible except by dropping the fuel tank or by carefully inspecting the underbody.

Good luck.

Smoke machines

Smoke machines

This is becoming a major to pain. Many dealer shops are investing in a smoke machines. It's a about the only way they can find the small leaks. Soooo much faster. Guess these will be the next tool needed in the garage? I'll have do some further checking there are 1-5 levels of leaks. OBD II evap specs are getting tighter than my 98,way tighter. Actually 0455 is the only leak on ours. If you are smelling that should very easy find, No NO not the matchs.
I'd check the obvious in the rear from canister area, to filler area and back to the tank first.
Be glad you don't have 2002 Caravan as my daughter-in-law's. This whole evap leak thing could get very expensive. Now if I can just talk the daughter in law getting the smoke test done?
