What could possibly make a CNG 98 4 cyl auto worth 7,0000? Is there a subsidy from some idiotic state agency that makes this worth while?

There was an article on either the consumerist.com or jalopnik.com regarding things like this. With gas prices going through the atmosphere at the moment, cars that get good milage or are alternative fuels such as the CNG car you mention are going for higher prices on ebay.

The article that I mention states that a 90's (cant remember exact year) Geo Metro gets 1 mpg less than the Prius Hybrid, and bluebooks for about 1/10th the price. Yet its going for 1/4 the price of a prius right now, or more.

I have a friend who drives an f250 CNG for work. I didn't know they made those but they do. He has to plan his route to make sure he is near a CNG station but he says its somewhere around 2-3 dollars a gallon equivelant. Thats a good reason to get one right there.

Still doesn't make sense

Still doesn't make sense

Even though the equivalent price of cng is lower, it still does not make sense to significantly over pay for a well used car.

But then again, if consumers could do the math, they would quickly figure out that selling a car that gets poor fuel milage and replacing it with a new car that gets great fuel mileage is usually a losing proposition. At miles per year less than 15,ooo (depending on the fuel milage difference) it takes more than 5 years to recoup the price difference in fuel savings.

Heck, the deal that chrysler has going now is drawing in new suckers left and right, good for them if the customer cannot do the math. How many gallons per year for a car that gets 20 mpg and drives 12,000 miles (the cap on the $3 per gallon subsidy)? Only 600 gallons. At retail price of $4 per gallon, only a $600 subsidy, at $5 per gallon a $1,200 subsidy. Still probably not a great financial decision, especially if you had a paid for serviceable car.

And that article I mention is all about that. Someone paying 5 or 6k for a used old Geo Metro with over 100k on the odo. Does it make sense? Not really. But maybe you are keeping the gas guzzler. My tour is thrashed in the front. I'm going to repair it, should be around 1k to repair it, and use it for its milage compared to my Five Hundred and my moms Xterra. In fact my mom is the one pressuring me to repair it for her usage. My Five Hundred gets better milage than her car, and requires a lower grade fuel to boot.

As a second car or daily driver I believe it would make more sense for a CNG or an older car such as a CRX or a Metro that gets insane milage that you can get for 5k or less compared to buying a new prius for 20k + .

haha i saw a prius today that had a big bumper sticke that said 101 MPG it was funny tho he was going like 45 in a 55 i bet he has to give a extra 30-45 mins. for traveling i had to crack it to about 70 as i went by lol....

Modified to run on batteries most of the time when going like 40 and under. check on youtube about it... it was mentioned on some show and some website to boot. Gets 100+ miles per gallon.

So, you are killed when you are rear ended by a semi for going way under the speed limit....but those sure are good miles per gallon numbers

Its for driving around the city duh...

If your driving a prius 45 on the freeway first your a douchebag for doing that... and then your a douchebag for driving under the speed limit there...

God I hate prius' (is it priuses or pruisi?)

In Utah, a $3000 tax incentive and $.65 a gallon?

On the Craigslist in Salt Lake City, people from New York and CA are offering to drive their cars to Utah if you buy them.

Utah!!!!!!!

Utah!!!!!!!

I would expect some rational thought from the conservatives in Utah. Sounds like they caught the same idiotic fever from Arizona. Several years ago you could get the state of AZ to pay for your heavy duty truck or suv flex fuel vechicle through tax credits. A policy that was widely used and abused. Took a few years for AZ to understand the idiocy of it all and drop it.

I remember that, full size excursions driving down the carpool lane because they got the state to pay for 1/2 there truck, was disgusting.

A warning to those considering a CNG Contour: Ford had some problems with some CNG models. The recall involved *disabling* the CNG system; the problem didn't affect gasoline-only operation.

So if you actually want to run a Contour on CNG, pay attention to the details for that particular model year.
