Hello everyone,

Well, I have a new problem with my Contour.
It started about a week or so ago.
It shuts off while driving, I will be driving down the road and it just shuts its self off.
I have been able to just start it and drive it again but today every time I started it, it would run for a few moments and then shut off again.

At first I thought it may have something to do with the air conditioning, today it shut off while I was driving and I had the air on but when I went to start it again it continued to shut off without the air being on.

Other then that it runs great, fast and smooth.

Any ideas?

Thanks again
Len

The first thing that comes to mind is a faulty fuel pump, have you looked into that yet? Does it sputter before it dies, and by sputter I mean does the engine feels like its surging before it keels over?

Other than that is there enough fuel, is the fuel your using good? maybe fuel filter getting clogged? Is your battery/alternator good? and are there any check engine lights?

Hi jk1w,

No sputter, it just turns off like if I was turning the key off.
No check engine lights, plenty of fuel and I changed the filter about 9 months ago.

Thanks

Lot's of possibilities, you'll need to narrow them down.

Loss of electrical power.

Loss of spark.

Loss of fuel.

My 98 was doing something along that vein a few years back. I finally diagnosed it to a shorted wiring harness (insulation faulty) that comes off the battery. http://www.contour.org/ceg-vb/showthread.php?30238-Red-Leads-to-Power-Center Problem never came back and it's been 5 years now.

If your car is an early '98 more than likely the culprit unfortunately could very well be your wiring harness. Before I swapped my fuel injector, main and battery/fuse box harness it was making my car do all sorts of strange things. Had to put her down till I swapped it all. I would take a good inspection over ALL the wiring you can see. The battery wires are usually in very bad shape or as mine were, completely exposed.
