Hello: I own a 1995 Ford Contour. I love it, have had limited problems with it. But, now my mechanic tells me that my engine harness is breaking down, with bare wire showing. I am looking for help to put my baby back on the road. What do I do?

Get a new mechanic, find someone who'll work on older cars.

or do it yourself
Stripping back the insulation on the bad part of the harness, it's not that hard, and then re wrap the wires
separately with electrical tape.

Yup, find a new mechanic. Relatively simple repair for someone with some patience to do wiring repairs. It sounds like a daunting job, but if you can clearly see the damage to the wiring, then there is no reason someone can’t get in there and cut and splice new wires in place, rather than have to replace the whole harness. I would rather pay someone 8 hours or so to replace and repair a section of my harness, rather than the cost of a new one and the huge amount of labour involved. Search around, you’ll find someone!
