Hello all,
I have a slight annoyance with m 98CSVT. the emergency brake light on the console flashes with no apparent pattern. is there a sensor i can look for, or something i can tighten.

I have made sure that the e-brake is fully released and it will flash when i am driving.

any help is greatly appreciated!

If you mean the parking brake light in the instrument panel cluster is coming on and off for no apparent reason (more so when you do a hard stop or start or turn), then check the brake fluid level under the hood.

Coincedently, check for either a leak in your brake system causing this loss, OR, look at the wear on your brake pads.

You will likely need to replace your pads if you don't have a leak.

well i can tell you what happenned to me. the button under the center console, that causes that light to illuminate when you pull up the "E brake" was worn down so much that it would not fully depress when i pushed down the handle. i had to take the console off, and slightly bend the housing that the button is on so the handle would depress it fully. this would be something to check after you have made sure your brakes are not leaking and the reservoir is full, and pads are in good condition.

Mine did that before. I kept thinking the handle wasn't all the way down. But all I did was top off the brake fluid, which was a little low, and it fixed it.

While on the subject of e-brakes, all years and models, when pulling the e-brake handle should light the brake light on the dash right?

Our 95 Mystique we picked up doesn't light when the handle is pulled. I assume it should like other years. The bulb is good because it was on and off when we were having trouble with leaking brake lines.

Sorry to hijack.

yes if the parking brake is on the brake light should be on ... chances are the switch is sticking or not working ...

yeah the taurus I bought for the gf had that happen. I got the guys at the shop where I bought it check it out and the guy told me it was a litle switch on the brake that engaged the sensor for the light, the e-brake still works fine, the light just doesnt always come on.

Hey Ray and Tony, is that flashing ebrake light warning on all contiques? I had a bad master cylinder on my mystique a while back and the resevoir was low, but never had the light flash, it does work though. Only reason I knew something was up was due to the spingy brakes.

To clarify something:

The light illuminating is NOT an INTENDED design or notification system. The light comes on with low brake fluid, OR when the e-brake is pulled.

The pads being worn displaces more fluid and thus causes the light to come on.. SOMETIMES. not an intended thing, thus don't rely on it.

It does not flash. It lights up when the fluid level is low. It probably appears to flash because it is tethering between the "acceptable" and "unacceptable" level or the bulb is about to blow or the wiring has a bad connection or sensor (or switch) is about to break down.

Edit. Sometimes it does not light up because, (1) sensor is broken, (2) float is stuck on top, (3) Parking brake switch is broken, (4) other reasons.

sigh, was going to ask the same question the other day, wish I had...

now im looking at a new headlight + dented hood and a careless driving ticket :( (rear-ended some guy, he braked hard for no good reason. Real jackass too, was doing maybe 10 when i hit him messed up his exhaust, but didn't even touch his bumper. Right after I hit him he jumps out and calls to a near by car to call 911, he looks around a bit and then just goes back in the car to wait, then, he complains about his back.

I suppose this might clear me of the careless driving ticket if the brake fluid was low, perhaps, but F***.

why on earth would they make the e-brake and low brake fluid the same light though? One really isn't that important the other is serious.

The parking brake is important. With a manual transmission, with the car in Neutral, the car will roll on a slope. With an automatic, on a slope, it would be hard on the transmission (and trying to get out of Park) without the Parking brake on.

I ended up checking the brake fluid level and sure enough, it was low. I topped it off and waa-laa! I haven't had to add anymore, so looks like it might be time for new pads.

Thanks for all the help guys!!!
