I've been look'n at headlight switches and this is what I found. The 95 & 96 at least, perhaps even the 97 may still have it.... a light in the center of the knob that is to light the markings on the knob itself. I checked each pin using a lighted continuity tester and marked them below. As you can see there are additional possibilities as to what this switch could do by adding another wire or two. This switch is a direct replacement for all 98-00's. I have one from a 95 Contour, it is orange, and one from a 95 Mystique, it is red, both have the exact part number and pinout to them. I hope you find this info useful. The wire colors are from a 95 Tour pig tail.

95-97 headlight switch with fog lights

Forget it when I posted the info it scrambled so if you would like it PM me and I'll email it to you. AF

So basically what you're saying is I need to add this to my junkyard shopping list? Thanks... I just got done with the rear dome light and the upgraded dimmer switch

For serious, thanks for sharing. It's aggrivated the crap out of me that the knob doesn't light up.

Here are a few pics:

As you can see my 99 HL sw has two pins missing in the middle row.

After popping out the red center retainer insert your new contacts into the back of the connector. Cut off your old bulb then match and splice the wires. As an alternative you could just add in the contacts to the connector and splice those wires to the existing ones. Either way is fine.

It should look like this now with the contacts added.

Your new switch installed w/ lighted stem. (I know that you already checked to see the bulb was good)

Enjoy

And for you Mystique parts fans, there is always the fog light indicator light mod.....

The Mystique headlight and mirror switch bezel is interchangeable with the Contour one. Just one thing be sure to use a 98 Mystique one if you have a 98 - 00 Tour as there is an additional cutout to fit around a bolt in that one. In fact now that I think about it that one could be used on any of the vehicles.
This is incorrect the Mystique headlight & mirror switch bezel does not fit a Contour. This part of the dash is different due to the driver side glovebox. My error.... sorry. AF

No I do not see an end to mods for this vehicle in the near future.......

Looks good and fairly straight forward. I might try that... The interesting part is, I just figured out the other day that I actually had floor lights. One bulb socket was pulled up by the "amp" and tucked in with a bunch of wires with a burnt out bulb, the other was just empty. I put new bulbs in both of them and they work perfectly fine!

Just finished mine up. The White & White/Purple wires that needed to be added from the '96 harness were already in the connector in my '98 E1, however they had been clipped right at the base of the connector and left me no room for a splice. Wierd.

A note for anyone picking up a lighted switch from a junkyard, if you grab about 8" of harness with the green connector, you'll wind up getting 4" each of the afore-mentioned White & White/Purple wires with another 4" of paired wires after a splice on each one. That makes chaining the central light into the Black & White/Green wires from the other bulb very easy.

Not sure if this applies to this switch/harness, but I read a recall bulletin about the headlight switch/harness and contacts overheating and burning, again, not sure if it applies. I think mine was replaced because I have butt splices between the wiring and the headlight harness in my car

Yes I'm sure it was this harness since I have seen several that were replaced like yours. I have also seen many that should have been. Similar to the heater switch connectors in the HVAC panel.

Please also check out my how to post in interior lighting on this subject.
