Fuse #23

99 ford contour se sport,

My brothers car lately has been blowing fuse #23 once i put the car into drive. when the fuse blows i lose my blinkers and hvac controls. Once i stop the car and put into park i cannot go back into drive until i change it..i assume this may be a safety feature since i lose my blinkers, but anyways this started about 6 months ago and after blowing 15amp fuses every time i went to a 30amp and it held up until today so i will see what yo guys think.


I checked for any funny lookings and didnt see anything and i wasnt totally sure where the ground is, This is in the fuse box under the steering wheel.

Check the back of the Passenger Compartment fuse panel where Fuse 23 meets Fuse 24 in the fuse box left of the steering wheel. It could be rusted out.

In addition, check the wiring under Fuse 3 in the Power Distribution box next to the battery.

Since the fuse blows when you shift from P to D, it's probably a short circuit in the backup lamp system that is being activated as you go through the REVERSE position.

To isolate:

Ignition off. Set ebrake.

Place the shift lever in NEUTRAL following the shift-interlock override procedure in your owner's manual.

Ensure a good fuse is installed in F23

Turn key to RUN

If fuse did not blow then, move shift lever to reverse.

If it just blew, that would indicate the backup lamp circuit is the fault.

Possible faults in the backup lamp circuit would include a shorted bulb/socket, piched/damaged wire, or in the case of this owner(http://www.contour.org/ceg-vb/showthread.php?t=32926&highlight=f23), a shorted DTR sensor connector due to corrosion. While his vehicle was a 95, the F23 circuit is essentially identical.
