Found a 23,000 miler from a 01 Sable. Wrecked car, broken valve cover:shrug: no warranty or return $450.00. What do I need to look for as far as damage? No return makes me leary and not Dennis Leary. This motor is close to home so no shipping but tax :help:

honestly I would pass. it may not have any damage but the cost plus miles plus that risk isn't worth it imho

if you do got for it make sure you pull the oil pan and look for peices of the valve cover. I saw a 3L once where the valve cover was broken and the bits fell down into the oil pan ....don't want the oil pump to get that at all ...

Doesn't sound bad to me. I'd change the rod bearings on any engine. Who has had a warranty on these forums?!! It's like you can return it after you moded it to go in a Contour. Tell $375 and see what they say. Sounds like it's been sitting on for a while.

I have been looking for roughly two weeks and have found very little for under 500.00 (7 to 800 with shipping). Are the prices on the rise or what:shrug:.

Should I just pull and rebuild the 2.5? Sounds like it has a bad rod bearing or ?

if you are happy with the engine and the price go for it.

just saying that in my area a number of us got 04 3L engine for $300. milage varied between 17k and 34k. others have gotten lower miles, 9k, 11k, for around the same price. plus an 04/05 engine is slightly better then the 01 to 03 engines because of revisions.

Yeah, these places can very often alter their priceing. Always offer less than they are asking just to see if they take it. Worst case is you still pay their asking price or keep looking.

I try to give myself about a month to find a good motor. LKQ has been able to tell me how long stuff is on the shelf....that to me is a major piece of info and I am willing to pay greater amounts of $$ to know its not been sitting for a long long time.

I would much rather have something with higher miles and know its 'fresh' than super low miles and no idea how long its been sitting.

I figure I'll get her home and start tearing it down, as I'm doing that I can look for a good motor at a fair price. I'll just pull the 2.5 and remove what I need to transfer over and start cleaning and Powder Coating parts:laugh:.

Sounds like a party. Are you going to pull the 2.5 before you tear it down? I would go for the 3L, I wouldn't think it be worth it at all to pull a 2.5and spend all the money rebuilding it, when you could have a 3L for all the work you are doing, and it won't cost you too much more cash.

I am going to put a 3.0 in it. I am going to tear out the 2.5 and start cleaning the engine bay and any parts I may be reusing. Anything I am using will get powder coated

Well I got the car home Saturday, plan on starting a tear down after the Holidays. 2.5 sounds like upper engine problems and not a rod bearing like I suspected. Sounds like the left valve train has some problems, maybe a bad valve.

often a bad bearing sounds like a problem in the top of the engine....
