You may remember that I just finished a ported 3L back in the spring...it died in August due to cam friction and a jumped timing chain. I didn't have the urge to port another head and I'm a bit "cam" shy, so I went full 3L this time.

The new one is a 2004 with fully functional COP. I moved over all my other hi-po stuff like headers, pro-flow maf, fidanza, etc.

Started up and ran like new instantly! Really quiet and smooth...ass kicking torque. To you NW guys....this is what I was doing while you ran up to Packwood.

here's some shots:

So the whole conversion went well, with the EGR tube being a bigger PITA than the COP. But all is not good....it looks like LKQ has sold me a motor with a bad head gasket or cracked head. I'm blowing white smoke at any touch of the throttle...seems like the water is disappearing.

We'll see where this leads, but if it is a head issue, I'll fix it and get back at it.

That does look super duper nice in your '95. I like it better for some reason. It sucks that the motor is already giving you problems but it seems like you are still going forward, literally ;)

we need a stronger word than sucks, but yes, it now falls into the category of something to fix...the conversion and all seems perfect. I can't believe how quick the motor revs in neutral compared to my SVT cam'd ported motor....slams the redline....and blows steam out the back.

Geez that's awful to hear. The build looks spectacular though. Glad you're not throwing in the towel!

That is a great looking install.

If i went with an 3L i would def do a drop in 3L. It seems more enjoyable IMHO.

Good luck with it, and i hope it's just a head gasket leak.

LKQ has a return policy, but if you sat on the engine foe a bit.... you might be SOL.

Like the others have said, the swap looks really clean and right at home in your car. Great job!

but the greater problem maybe he installed it in a car other then what the engine came from and if they find that out then I would say all bets are off on a warrenty ....

I am counting on no warranty, and honestly as those of you who work on cars know, the time and cost is in the labor...head gaskets and bolts, or even a new head are cheap.

Update - Running

Since I really wanted to see how the 2004 3L cams worked before I took a head off (since that would be the best time to switch in my SVT cams if that's what I decide), I went ahead and ran some "Blue Devil" head sealer though the system. It took about 2 hours of running and the leak sealed, so I 'm out running around getting to know the new motor for a while.

If you're not familiar with the Blue Devil, it's a clear blue liquid without particals to clog up heater cores etc. Instead it used sodium silicate to form a glass seal at the point of the leak. I'm hoping this lasts for a few months so I can make a solid decision as to what cam to run. So far I like the punch at 4k...very solid, with a reasonable run out of power by about 6500. I'm running my Superchip, which thinks I have a hot SE motor. Aggressive timing, with a bump at 3200rpm and leaned out fuel map at WOT. Running 19# injectors until I can do a real tune with an SCT chip. My ECU thinks I have 17#, so the Superchip's leaner map is a bit helpful at WOT.

0-60 time will suffer a bit since I can't make 60 in 2nd anymore.

No CELs, even though I'm using all 2004 sensors etc with my 1995 ECU. Does have an odd note at idle, like a quieter, suppressed version of moosing through the integrated IAC. I can stop it by blipping the throttle.

If I get enough run time before the head leaks again, I'll swap in my optimized TB components and maybe even send out the 3L TB for boring to see how far I can take the stock cams.

I love how the '95 SE's seem to handle having a new motor a little better than most of the OBDII systems. I like how clean and stock yours still looks too. Very nice job.

Yeah....you know I have no CELs, even though I ended up using 2004 Taurus parts...my IAC and Knock Sensor are Taurus, and my vacuum secondary switch is not even connected.....gotta love it.
