Hey guys, for some reason my car doesn't like either the radiator fan or the blower fan.

The wiring at the connector to the radiator fan keeps melting/burning up and then the fan won't turn on. Ive already went to a junkyard and got a whole new fan and harness (the 95 harness was falling to pieces). When i put it in, the harness was like new. Now right at the connector the wires are bare and very crispy even with the new fan motor.

The same thing happens with the blower motor, only the burnt connection is at the inside fuse box. Ive spliced and have already went thru 3 fuseboxes from a junkyard because this connection keeps burning/melting.

Any ideas?

are you sure you got a good used fan:shrug: most I have seen are seized or sticking very bad .If the fan is drawing to much amperage to run it will melt the wiring .They actually had a recall on some early v6 fans for this reason

Recalls Summary

Vehicle Make / Model: Model Year(s): FORD / CONTOUR 1995-1996
MERCURY / MYSTIQUE 1995-1996
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 00V367000 Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: 1995 PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE 2.0L AND 2.5L ENGINES, AND 1996 VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.5L ENGINES. TIGHTENING OF THE ENGINE COOLING FAN MOTOR BEARINGS, UP TO AND INCLUDING MOTOR STALL, CAN RESULT IN INCREASED MOTOR TORQUE AND HIGHER THAN NORMAL MOTOR CURRENT AND ACCOMPANYING HIGH MOTOR TEMPERATURES. Consequence: OVERHEATING OF THE COOLING FAN MOTOR DUE TO EXCESSIVE CURRENT CAN RESULT IN SMOKE AND ODORS FROM BEARING GREASE, INSULATION AND OTHER INTERNAL MOTOR COMPONENTS. IF ELECTRICAL CURRENT CONTINUES TO BE APPLIED TO THE MOTOR, INTERNAL MOTOR COMPONENTS COULD IGNITE POSSIBLY IGNITING OTHER ENGINE COMPARTMENT COMPONENTS. Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A POSITIVE TEMPERATURE COEFFICIENT DEVICE IN-LINE WITH EACH FAN MOTOR. FORD WILL ALSO EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THE ENGINE COOLING FAN ASSEMBLY TO A TOTAL OF 8 YEARS OF SERVICE OR 100,000 MILES FROM THE WARRANTY START DATE, WHICHEVER OCCURS FIRST. IF THE VEHICLE ALREADY HAS MORE THAN 100,000 MILES, THIS COVERAGE WILL LAST UNTIL JULY 31, 2001. Notes: OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN FEBRUARY 5, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-392-3673. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

damn, this will be the 2nd time i will have to replace the fan... however the 1st time i got one from a junkyard. It works fine on high and low and spins freely... Could it just be getting old and drawing too much amps?

I installed a separate fuse holder next to my fusebox because the OEM one melted the fuse into the block. Problem is finding a fuse holder that has heavy wire to the posts. IIRC the fuse is 20 amps? Needs 10 gauge or better wire and a good HD Scotch lock. First holder melted till I found a good HD one. I ran the blower for a long time to cool the car down and the charge was good. I discovered the pressure switch below the battery was short cycling. I jumped out the compresser relay to make the compressor run all the time and the air cooled down real fast. The switch is on a schraider valve so it is easy to replace.
