So I failed smog. Too much HO and CO2 during the 15 mph test phase. Car was fully warmed up. I'm throwing the following ODBII codes:

P0340 - CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR
P1131 - Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 1
P1151 - Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 2
P0174 - oxygen sensor in bank 2 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust)

The crankshaft position sensor has been replace and a new air filter installed. What the heck do I do now? The dealer wants 140 bucks for a complete diagnostic to find out what's wrong. I don't mind that so much. I was just wondering what to expect and if anyone has any information for me. My ride is a '98 E1 CSVT with 124K miles. Thanks!

The CAMshaft and CRANKshaft Position sensors are two different sensors.

Change the two upper (Bank 1 Firewall side and Bank 2 Radiator side) O2 sensors.

Not bad to do,looking at roughly 50 dollars per O2 sensor. To change them out just take a wrench or o2 sensor socket and unscrew then screw in new on.Been a while since I been under hood of my car and can remember if they are easy to get to or not.

I left you a message in the California section also commenting that it is an easy fix to replace the o2 sensors. Just follow your headers and exhaust and you will find them.

If you were in SoCal I could help.

Try posting again in the California section asking for NorCal help. It should be there for you.

Thanks for all the replies.

Thanks for all the replies.

Am I correct in my assumption that if indeed my O2 sensors are bad and I change them for new ones; I will then pass smog? Please forgive my ingnorance. I'm a computer geek and not a mechanic. Oh, and what's up with the camshaft position thingy? Should I be concerned about it?

Additional information: Here is what failed!
15 MPH; RPM = 1961
%CO2 = 13.8
%O2 = 0.1
HC (PPM) = 84 (MAX IS 56 failed)
CO2% = 0.78 (MAX IS 0.51 failed)
NO (PPM) = 35
I passed all at 25 MPH.

Repeat. The CAMshaft position sensor and the Crankshaft Position sensor are two different sensors. If this is broken, you can't fix the other and hope that this will be fine.

And yes, you should be concerned about it.

Picture of the two sensors.

Thanks Tony. I realize the difference between the two sensors. I confused them in my earlier post. Thank you for steering me straight. I'll have it replaced along with the O2 sensors and will take it from there.

Replaced two dead O2 sensors and the camshaft position sensor. Car now runs like it did when it was new. Going for smog pretest tomorrow. Thanks for all the help from everyone!

Passed California smog! Woo hoo! Changed out the camshaft position sensor and both upstream O2 sensors and was golden. My car is running like she did when new. Thanks to all for suggestions.
