I replacing my clutch. I could not get the drivers side drive shaft out, so I had to take the tranny out with the driveshaft, wheel, and strut (what a PITA). It looks like a side of beef, just more metallicy. I have tried everything to pry it out - the special tool with the slide hammer, a couple of crowbars screwdrivers and I tried halfheartedly to knock it out from the passengers side. I tried placing the tranny with the bellhousing on the floor, but that didn't help (a CEGer said that he did that with an ATX and the DS just magically came out???)

With all the wrestling with it, I am sure the CV joint is messed up and I have messed up the oil seal - so I am committed now.

Any advise. I want to finish this this weekend. i went into this taking my time, but this is the 5th weekend and its getting rediculaous.

It I take a rod and a 5 lb hammer and start whalling on it from the passenger's side - what can I mess up?

You run the risk of messing up the differential if you pound on it from the passenger side. Not sure how risky it is. Also, if you aren't hitting the dead center of the DS shaft you could creat little bends on the edges of the DS and that would really make it hard to bring it out.

Really though, that is not a bad method, it should only take one or two good taps to come loose. Its just a little circlip holding it in there.

I have always been able to get them out by 'gently' prying with a pickle fork between the DS shaft and the trans case. I reiterate, GENTLY, cause if you bust a hole in the case or snap one of the ribs off of it you are F'ed in the A.

Thanks for the reply.

i have tried gently and it just ain't coming out. I tried wackin it from the passenger side but it ain't budging. I separated the DS from the inner CV joint. it looks okay in there. I thought I had whackered up the oil seal, but it was just some splinters fromthe wood that I had againsty the case for leverage. I am going to pour some tranny fluid in and see if the seal holds up and if it does, I will repack the CV joint and reboot it and go that route. do you think I am headed for trouble.
