Alright so I'm taking apart my door handles to paint some of the components. It appears that the pin holding the door handle to the the assembly is a permanent installation. The pin is slid through the handle assembly with the spring slid over it, then the pin ends are crimped to prevent the pin from sliding around. So my question is... has anyone every disassembled a door handle assembly and then reassembled it? I'm thinking I might be able to find some rod stock at the local hardware store and make my own replacement pin, but if anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it. Here are some pics to explain what I'm talking about.

EDIT: The pic of the one taken apart I cut off the flanges on the crimp so I could slid it through.

View attachment 12277Not on a door handle, but something similar.. I came up with this..

Steel rod, two washers, two cotter pins....

that's how i would do it. maybe with a little graphite on it.

Yea I thought of doing something similar, but space is at a premium. Not sure if I could fit anything there as there is still the plastic trim bezel that goes around the handle on the outside, which would most likely hit any kind of washer or cotter pin.

Do just like they do. Start with metal rod, peen one end, slide it in and peen other end while parts assembled. Need access to a vise to do it. Piece of cake...................

You did see the handle assembly right? I'm not sure how I could even do that. I mean the first part you described was exactly what I was thinking... but the last part of peening the other end. I just don't have the room. If I could get a soft enough rod where I could use a vise grips to crush the other end... then maybe.

Coat hanger rod? Use soft steel. Small punch flat end up mounted in vise. Another punch used to peen it, you're making this harder than it has to be................
