Daytona Coupe progress

If anyone is considering getting some 3M Di Noc carbon fiber vinyl for anything, be careful its a PITA to work with. I tore a $140 sheet of it today trying to work with it when it was a little cool in the basement. I may not have enough to finish now.

Can't really put a Mini/Fit in the same category as a Daytona Coupe; maybe I'm just a simple country boy.

I don't think anyone drew the comparison outside of the mirrors which need to be white, I can tell you that they'll not get that dirty, its not like the car is a DD. If you don't go white, I'd wrap them in 3M Di-Noc. The mirrors really need to stand out IMO.

Yeah because this car isnt gonna stand out enough

I know that but I'm sure the white mirrors will look great on the car, trust me. Mini Cooper or not, body color mirror caps on the Mini don't look as good as the white mirrors do or even those who go for the red mirror caps.

Are you putting a gumball and number on the Daytona?

13-1/2.6

cant go wrong with that number!

i was wondering if you are having any major fitment issues with this kit.
i buddy of mine is building a F5 33 hot rod and has had numerous issues from having to completely rebuild the aluminum grill to correct alignment issues, he has had to completely rework every panel edge to get proper gaps, add material to the frame to securly mount the body and hood sides...and the list goes on.

did you see anythign like that with your kit?

Ha, the coupe is way worse than the hot rod. I had to completely cut the back out of both doors and reglass to get the door frames to fit. I have about 100hrs of work in the hood and still not finished. The radiator ductwork is a joke. We wont even talk about the rear hatch.

Yes, on the doors and the hood, I just don't know what number im going with

Well, you could go with the year you were born, 11' for the year the car is completed, 65' for obvious reasons, a favorite number of yours, Payton Mannings number in college or a certain 3 digit number of an awesome road near you.

It will probably be #13 or 15. #13 is CSX 2299 which is the most successful Coupe. Won Daytona in 65 with Bob Bondurant and Joe Schlessler. The #15 car is one Dan Gurney drove at Rheims in 64 when Car and driver magazine had the Dan Gurney for President campaign and stickers he ran on the car at that race. There will be one of these on my car.

it amazes me how horrible these kits really are. they promote them as something a shadetree could easily put together and end up with a beautiful car.
but in reality, you need tons of 'extra' work to get them to be presentable.

my buddy is a very picky engineer...a perfect example is the grill. the vertical bars were slightly off center from top to bottom. it wasnt really noticeable, but didnt look right.
after cutting the grill up and repsotioning everything, along with lowering one half of it because it wasnt symetrical, he now has about a .600" gap between the drivers side leading hood edge and the top of the grill.
the whole rear half of the car is designed to be bolted to the frame with 2 bolts.
the gas tank mounting tabs were so far off, the bolt holes didnt line up with the frame at all.

its disheartning to see stuff like that on a not so cheap kit.
but i guess the satisfaction of knowing that you put the extra effort into it to make it right, kind of makes up for it...?
haha

They'll do a version 2 eventually and fix everything folks have had problems with. The roadster is now a MK 4. The Coupe is unfficially on its 4th version now. They just don't move the volume of hot rod and coupe kits to warrant addressing the issues everytime someone finds a tiny thing wrong. The roadster on the other hand gets everything fixed as soon as its discovered.

3M Di-Noc FTMFW!

Screw it, wrap the entire car in it, how bad ass would that be? BTW you sent me a txt earlier Josh about undercoating the underside of the hood, why are you doing that again?

Because the bottom of the hood is actually the fenderwell over the front tire. If a rock is thrown out of the tire and hits the bottom of the hood it could spider the paint or crack the fiberglass.

The painter comes tomorrow to approve final bodywork. I hope he says its a go. Gonna file down the headlight covers a little bit more and finish the door ends when I pull them back off. Passenger side of the hood is still a touch off but I dont think I can fix it without cutting the hood in half and glassing it back together, I can live with it I guess.

While I applaud your efforts for perfect body work you must know in all likely hood it will be way better the an original would have been
