Hello all, I having a problem with one of my 2 rad cooling fans. I need to know which one is on the drivers side so i may disconnect the relay for it..it is not turning and is smoking hot. I read that R2 is high speed and R5 is low speed. I am guessing that the slow speed would come on first when cooling the rad, so is, R5 the correct relay to pull out for now. I don't have the use of a second car, love my contour, just need time and money to fix it.....thanks for the help. I was about to do the brakes when this happened too..

1997, 2.5V, 272,000 km and climbing...need to win the lottery to fix all that is failing...i have a list if you like to know...one thing at a time...and hope, good as new!

Hi dalermc.
I just did some checking at auto zone and advanced auto parts. They sell separate fan motors for each side, and pic shows electric connector, maybe you could just unplug the defective motor at the fan assembly, the wire from the motor to the connector looks short so it will be close to fan?Check out advanced auto parts web site you can see what i mean.Driving without the proper cooling is not advised(just 1 fan operating),an overheat will make your list of problem a whole lot bigger.wish I could help more but maybe this is a start.-Paul

I hate bonus repair surprises! The 2 fans work at the same time (both low/both high). Must replace the bad motor or entire assembly. Having one fan (bad one disconnected) will give you time to find parts, watch temp gauge, avoid A/C use! Might be possible to get a used assembly, if its fans spin OK.
