Chicago + Tints = Fines?

LOL.

I'm thinking about getting my windows tinted sometime next month, but wanted to know if anybody in Chicago has trouble with the law for having them...

This law prohibits modifying the front windshield and both front side windows by darkening them with tint. While some states allow moderate percentages of tint on front vehicle glass, Illinois and more specifically Chicago does not allow any.(for the front and windshield i guess)

The law has no restrictions on tinting the rear window and side back windows.
Because of all the e-mails I'm getting, my assumption (and that's all it is--an assumption), is that police, for whatever reason, are writing more of these violations. And I'm not sure why.
The bad news is, this piddly $25 violation will increase ten-fold on January 15, 2009 to a stunning $250!!!
This little tidbit came to my attention by way of a reader, who passed on this link with the details from the city council.
It was passed in the city council by unanimous vote on July 9, 2008. Gee, thanks Aldermen for sticking it to us once again!
According to the resolution, tinted glass "poses a serious threat to the safety of police". I'll take their word on this. It's completely understandable why cops would be apprehensive pulling over a vehicle, and not knowing what lurked behind blacked out glass.
But does the fine for this violation really have to be $250?!?
This seems pretty steep considering most people with tinted windows are doing so to keep their vehicle from overheating and to reduce glare for improved visibility and safety while driving.
My research shows that Illinois, along with four other states, Alaska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Vermont, have the harshest tint laws in the nation. Chicago's tint law is nearly word for word, the same as the state of Illinois'. With this impending $250 fine, I would suspect it makes it the toughest, most expensive tint law in the entire country.
So my question is this: Is this fine about police safety? Or is it really about increasing revenue for a city that is desperate for any revenue?
My guess is, it's about revenue under the pretense of police safety.
Again, as much as I want our police officers to be safe, I don't believe that $250 is anywhere near a fair penalty.
The other problem with the law is that there is nothing written in it that provides an objective way for the tint to be measured.
When I spoke to Officer Mirabelli from the Media Relations office for the Chicago Police Department, he explained that "officers just know from experience," if a vehicle has tinted windows or not.
Nothing personal, but I'm not sure I trust this type of so-called "expertise". They're policemen, not tint technicians.
I have been receiving too many e-mails from drivers who claim they purchased factory new automobiles from dealers and have not made any alterations to their front side glass, yet still have been ticketed. All new automobiles come off the assembly line with naked glass--without any tinting. This means any tint would have to be applied after initial purchase.
An easy solution exists. It's called a tint meter. They run around $75-$100.
Cops armed with tint meters would be able to demonstrate, objectively, without a doubt, whether a vehicle's front and/or side glass is tinted or not.
Otherwise, this very expensive violation is up to the subjective whims or "expertise" of the police.
In the meantime, if you have tinted glass, I would strongly suggest you have that tint removed as soon as possible, or at least before January 15th, 2009.
Having the tint removed from your front side windows is pretty inexpensive and runs, from my research, from $30-$50 total--which is much more affordable than a $250 ticket.
That "new" $250 fine is a year old now, I'm guessing as long as i don't tint the front sides I'll be ok?

Chicago might be different from the rest of IL but i know as far as IL state law goes that recently it was passed that front tints are now legal. If i remember right all your windows can be 35% or the back can be as dark as you want but then the front can only be 50%. Windshield tint is illegal (except for up to six inches down from the top). I might be wrong on the exact percents but as long as you don't go darker than 35% its fine. HOWEVER like i said, Chicago has different laws than the rest of the state on some things.

I can't find anything that says Chicago has different laws on this though. http://www.cartype.com/pages/246/illinois_window_tinting_law

^ That link says below 30% in the rear makes front tints illegal, but i've never heard of anyone i know having problems because of rear tint.

Recent law says you can tint all the way around, 35% sounds right, however I have heard that the City of Chicago kept to no tint laws and are fining people

that's EXACTLY what i was going to say...

worst comes to worse you'll probably just have to remove the tints....
cops just get nervous when they cant see whats going on

Chicago has to follow the state law on tint whether they want to or not. They can have different laws for moving violations but vehicle equipment is solely under state jurisdiction.

Follow the state law of 35% all the way around or 50% front side with as dark as you want behind the b-pillar and you will be fine.

I have had 35% on the front side windows and a just a little darker than that behind the b-pillar since February 2002.

I moved here about a year and half ago and got the law changed when I got into town, now I'm working on the front plate....DUMBEST THING EVER!

I go to Chicago a lot and my wife drives her 2005 Sentra with tints at 35% all around except the windshield.

NOT one problem at all. Now...if you do get the windshield done and expect all to be fine and dandy...well...hehe.

35% - checking in!!!!!

50% up front, as dark as you want behind the B pillar. That is the current law...

As far as Chicago is concerned, yes they DO have to follow the Illinois-wide law, but to suggest that CPD actually does is a joke ... Anyone who is from Chicago knows that they dance to they own tune...

To answer your question, yes you can tint your windows according to what the law dictates... However, understand that you will stand out from the rest of the traffic, and thus will become an immediate target for Cops... And they can always find an excuse to pull you over...

Play hard, pay hard. It is what it is... ;)

This is going all over the place cause so many people have heard diffrent stuff. But from what I was told it's 35% all the way around the car. Tint has to be the same. If the rear is darker then the front is now illegal. If you don't tint the front then you can go as dark as you want on the back windows. Chicago still holds old laws. No tint on front window. Windshield 6" from the top.

My understanding is, 35% all the way around, with the exception of vans/suvs that have factory privacy glass, if you want to tint the fronts you can, but can only go 50%.

Just found this, can't track down a link to the actual law though..

Quick question since you guys are all around here. Did you install them yourselves or have a shop do it and then where did you get the tints from or installed and how much did it cost?

I'm in illinois, and see people with what I think is 35% all around, and that is also what I've seen the law as. I've also seen people with darker, but I've also seen cops hand someone a scraper when they pull them over at a gas station and make them peel it all off while the cop watches.

Chicago is a place I try to avoid, for this reason as well. Chicago is big on "rambo government" and they could care less what the law says about anything and they'll make up their own laws as they go along. Until just a year ago chicago made it illegal to own a gun in city limits until it was declared unconstitutional for them to do it. I suppose Cook County and its courts/judges are on the same side as chicago law.
