My cel goes on and off. The code is p402 and p401 anyone have some advice for these two codes?

Clean EGR valve, clean throttle body, replace DPFE sensor, in that order.

Can these codes get thrown if he has a MAF adapter with a K&N without a gasket in between the MAF and Adapter?

0401 is Insufficient EGR flow.
0402 is EXCESSIVE egr flow.

Those two are conflicting, thus I would look at the DPFE sensor (basically, it controls the EGR)

It is rare for an EGR to actually fail, much more common (though still not excessive) for the DPFE to fail first. Check the DPFE, then the EGR. I would recommend following Tony's suggestion of cleaning the TB and testing the EGR's functions either way. you'll need the TB to be cleaned either way if you have any significant mileage on the car at all.

thanks a lot i was reading the links you gave me will check it out. by the way so with these two sensors it should show a decrease in power from the engine? known issue?

I'd go with Ray's advice. Time for a new DPFE sensor.

Aftermarket ones have been hit or miss. I'd suggest spening the extra money and getting one of Ford's.
