So I learned tonight that the place where I had my first job, is closing. It was a full service gas station/garage, one of the last full service stations around, that had been in business since 1948 will be closing its pumps in early 2009 to make way for another stand alone drug store.
In fact half of Caste Village will be torn down and about 10 businesses, all locally owned and operated will be forced to close their doors to make way for Rite Aid.
I am saddened and a little angry about all of this. I have had so many good times in Caste Village and the gas station, the place right down the street where I lived my whole life. It has been a part of my life, as well as a part in the communities life.
So many people depend on that station for their gas and for service to their cars, from people they know and trust.
Caste Village and the gas station was where I spent most of time during high school. I worked at the gas station for 3 years and it was one of the best jobs I have ever had. The people I met there, the interactions with the community, the things I learned about cars and people will always be there, but the place will not. I planned on showing my children, there is the place where I had my first job. I worked hard to make the money to buy my first car there.
Its just sad to think that all of that will be gone, years and years of peoples memories will be gone, all for a stand alone drug store that will most likely be closed in 10 years.
I've decided to make a photo essay about the gas station, as a sort of tribute and to commemorate the gas station, as a record as to what was lost.
