BAT kit spring rates, other options < $600

i was just reading a few google searches..no wonder the guy just told me to strap the springs down, it sounds more involved than camber setups !! Sorry to have dragged this off topic..just hope it highlights the consequencies of lowering...G.

Ideally tie rod should be parallel to the road.

um, no. ideally the tie-rods should be pointed at the instant centers. that may or may not put them parallel with the ground.

bump steer occurs when the outer pivot of the steering linkage travels in a different arc then the lower ball joint. In order for a MacPherson strut suspension to have no bump steer, the tie rods must lie in line with the lower control arm with the inner tie rod end in plane with the inner pivot of the control arm. obviously there are packaging restraints that prevent this.

OK, I'll agree with you, but what do most bumpsteer kits do? (allow you to make the tie rod more parallel) and what do most tie rods on set-ups having bumpsteer issues look like? (less parallel, more angled)

From Steeda website:

Definition: Bumpsteer is a change in toe* angle caused by the suspension moving up or down. Bumpsteer is built into the geometry of the suspension and steering system, and has nothing to do with turning the steering wheel. The effect of bumpsteer is for the wheel to toe-in or toe-out when the suspension moves up or down. This toe change or “steering” occurs any time the suspension moves, whether it is from body roll, brake-dive, or hitting a bump in the road. Bumpsteer is undesirable because the suspension is steering the car instead of the driver.

To the OP- if you can't swing more than $600, I would suggest that you not do anything for now. Getting the springs and struts is just one step. You're going to want to replace some stuff while you're under there (as I found out) which will probably cost about as much as any budget spring/strut combo you might come across.

What else would you want to replace?
