Auot vs manual

For some odd reason in the 90's ford had a weird tendency to put a really large final drive gear in most of their cars, particuarly if you got a V6. The duratecs rev up to like 3000 RPMs at 70 miles per hour, I think its about 2800 for the ATX.

I was wondering from a economy perspecive (i.e. Fifth gear, just cruising). I specifically picked 50, because that's roughly my average speed. So roughly the same rpm then?

seems so.

I dont know if I can agree, a lot of people have put the Zetec Final Drive gear into a duratec MTX-75 and seen drastic increases in fuel economy. Like going from 29 MPG to 32.

Maybe it was for better passing power on the highway?

I'm hardly ever in 5th gear at 50 MPH, but I guess it just depends when you shift. I usually don't shift until about 3500 or 3800, so in a 98 CSVT, I am usually still in 4th. I can go into 5th, but I don't like coasting in any particular gear if the RPMS are (going to be) less than 2400.

im in 5th gear on my zetec at 45 if I am cruising constantly, whats the point in keeping the revs high if you arent accelerating? You are just wasting gas.
