I'm looking to upgrade to a higher output alternator for a future system upgrade. Looking for something capable of greater than 225 amps of draw. Based on the fuse rating of them amps I'd like to put in, just to begin, I want to match 3 amps to 3 subs, each amp has 3 x 25 amp fuses, so quick calc brings it to 225 amps that could potentially be drawn from the amplifiers. Not counting the car itself and it's systems. So my question to you audiofiles is what would you suggest for an alternator?

I've heard there is a place in Madison that will re-wrap your stock alternator to output a higher amperage, but it's a little expensive. Just want to see what other options are out there for me.

every time i see this topic anywhere ohio generators always comes to mind...see if they sell one that would fit or maybe they can re-wrap yours...

What kind of sub/amp combo do you have in mind? Depending on the subs you plan to go with, you might be able to use just one amp and not have to worry about the alternator.

Well, the point of it is though, is that I want to separately power all 3 subs so the amps will be more efficient and run cooler, but using 1 amp has crossed my head.

3 X REF1600a
3 X Kappa Perfect 10DVQ

Is what I'd like to get...

Understood. However, if you use a good quality amp you shouldn't have to worry about heat etc. I've always told people that you can probably use the top of my PPI A300 as a grill but it's never once shut down on me. If you decide to go with the DVQ's, you can have a final impedance of 2.67 ohms or .67 ohms. You will be hard pressed to find an amp that will run at .67 bridged. There are plenty of amps that will run at 2.67 bridged but you will need some serious power for those three subs. Now, if you go with the VQ's "single 4 ohm voice coil" you can run 3 of them and have a final impedance of 1.33 ohms. There are a few amps I can think of that would work well in that situation and probably net you about 400 watts rms per sub which should work great for those subs. If that sounds interesting, let me know and I'll post back with links to some amps.

Not to fire back at you, but I do install mobile audio for a living (refer to sig), so I've already detailed out my ohm loads. The reason I'm choosing the DVQ's is because they match up perfectly weather they are all being powered by one amp wired in a series parallel setup, or if they are each powered individually by separate amps wired at 2 ohms each. The reason that I'm going with Infinity is because we have a good discount going on with them that I'd like to use and get a nice setup. About 2 years ago we had a great one with Alpine, but I didn't have enough money at the time to go through with the purchase :(

The DVQ's can handle 400watts RMS and a 1600watt peak
The 1600a's can do 400watts RMS @ 4ohms and 600watts RMS @ 2ohm.

Pretty much makes it an ideal match up..... There are some amps out there on the high end that can handle .5 ohm loads. If you really wanted to you could wire a double parallel setup and get that low ohm load, but for these amps that application is not needed. Anyways though, I'm not here to really talk about the setup in this thread (even though I just did), I'm looking for information for uping my alternator.

No sweat, didn't notice the sig. I'm actually glad you know what you're doing; too many times I feel like I'm speaking sputnik to people lol. I had mentioned the one amp scenario because I thought it would be more cost effective. Good luck with the setup and if you decide to reconsider one amp, take a look at this beast!

Wow, that's quite an impressive amp... I don't know if I like that color so much though.... :P Quite pricey, but worth it. I had an old US amp laying around, but it had something wrong with it, what I'm not sure, i just remember I tried using it for an install and it didn't go, so I ended up using a different amp that the customer had to go an buy.

I think I may have a solution to my problem, I see we get discounts on Kenwood units as well, and their is an amp, the KAC-9103D does

500W x 1 @ 4ohm
900W x 1 @ 2 ohm
900W+ x 1 @ 1ohm

So I could match my subs in 2 ways, plus have a single amp, and bring my spending down about $200

yeah my friend pointed the site out to me, he bought one for his grandam , they shipped it out fast and the alt works great ... he got the 200 amp .. im gonna order one in a few weeks from there also

has anyone else ever dealt with this company directly. Ive been looking for a new alt over at NECO and came up with two other companys but there prices were crazzyyy. THey were in the $500 range.
