Alas, my poor CSVT died today! (Long)

Bought an engine and new clutch kit. Gonna try to restore it with the help of a mechanic friend. So far so good. My left foot is going beserk while driving my GF's Honda CRV! LOL!

Just let us know whenever you have questions. Its a lot easier to ask before hand than have to pull it out and redo it.
If you read a lot you should come across these but a couple of things that are really key to making your build work are 1. making sure the timing is done right and the pulse wheel is installed correctly and 2. If you have the heads off, be sure and put the engine mount on before reinstalling the heads. Those are the only items I can think of that result in major extra work if you screw them up. Everything else you can kind of come back to. Actually, let me add trimming the alternator tab to that list, although we did it with a sawsall in the engine bay on my build.

Majors:
-pulse wheel on correctly
-trim extra block tabs
-remove/cut flush pilot bushing from block
-dielectric grease electrical connections;)

and - if you get a "no start" condition check:
-3 big plugs on passenger side of motor
-spark plug wire order/coil plugged in
-charged battery
-check grounds

Don't ever let 'em die. Same thing almost exactly happened to mine and I managed to find an engine in LA for $700 (rare rare find, I know) then had a new transmission put in and shes running great except for the temp gauge. She sat for the better part of a year before that opportunity presented itself. All told I spent about $2800 to get her back running. Keep on truckin!

No, and exact replacement. My mechanic and I discussed the possibilities and decided to go with the same engine; much easier to install that way. He tells me all I need is fluids and a bolt or two for the exhaust and I should be on the road very soon. I will keep updating as progress is made.

Progress Update

Today we fired her up and she purred like a kitten! OMG! Oh what a feeling indeed! This is after doing the following: new used SVT 2.5L Duratec Engine, clutch, radiator, ball joints, serpetine belt, spark plugs, fluids, and oil filter. Since it was the exact same engine, it was more or less a "drop-N-swap" job. We raised the car and dropped the engine from the bottom on the subframe; no cherry picker required. Cake!

No CELs from the OBDII, and the temp was dead on center along with a perfect idle at 6750. I was impressed to say the least. Hot damn! The clutch was bled and adjusted along with the power steering. The cooling system is being purged of any bubbles. Only ran her for about 15 minutes as it was getting late.

Tomorrow we will install the splash guard, rotate the wheels, fuel up with fuel system cleaner; then take her out for a test drive to wear in the new clutch and check all systems. Everything was checked and rechecked several times and no major problems were encountered. My mechanic was very thorough. I learned a lot from him and I'm drooling for a 3 liter now! Next time perhaps, for I do plan on keeping this car forever!

Gonna detail her this weekend while looking for and replacing all the cheap plastic fasteners that were broken during this event; you know the ones, the things that hold the splash guard, side skirts, bumper, and such in place. I've found them before at Pep Boys.

Will update again tomorrow after the test drive. My left foot will not sleep tonight, it is so excited!

Hey just read your story, I'm glad your SVT is back on the road!! Mine died in the beginning of summer and it finally back on the road!! Thank God Ira funny because I have the same color SVT and about the same mileage it "died"!! Lol anyway from one owner of a recently reborn SVT to another welcome back!! Now don't use your right foot to aggressively lol... I almost got pulled over 2 nights ago haha

Excellent work. Don't throw out any good bits from the old motor now, they'll be good for your 3l swap in 10 years or so :)
Its truly one of the best feelings I've experienced, after 4 days of hard work without any feedback and then hearing that engine fire up.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies. I'm really looking forward to the test drive this afternoon. If that all goes well, I will spend the weekend detailing the heck out of her. Poor baby is covered in dust and grime at the moment.

Question? Do I have to do anything with the DMV since I have a new engine in her?

Best regards to all!

You could report it, but if the miles are less than what you had or within maybe 10k over, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just keep your reciepts for the work with the car and pass the info on if you sell it. Showing that you truely had another SVT motor installed is worth it's weight in gold for a true SVT enthusiast. The mileage on the odometer is what stands with the DMV.

yea those bad boys aren't cheap and are not easy to find. on the bright side you'll be saving time on the install. ahhh this was your chance for a 3L too. its cool though. its more important to get your ride on the street again.

Thanks blu-fuz! I appreciate it.

You are supposed to notify the DMV an pay a fee. There's a form on the website. Most people don't cause they won't approve a 3l swap. The only reason would be if you want to sell it and not have any worries. If you're going to keep it I wouldn't bother.

Good news, bad news!

Good news, bad news!

The good new is, the new engine runs very well and the car is ready to roll! The bad news is there is a @#$%* leak at the power steering coupling thing-a-ma-bob! Grrrrr! I did a search in the troubleshooting forum and found the problem; some friggin' teflon o-ring fitting that is a real PITA to fix. Anyway it was getting late so we are gonna tackle it tomorrow. I did read the post about splitting the coupling and adding o-rings and screwing it all in place. Will read it again in the morning to try to make sense of it all. Of course, it looks like we either have to fix it or pay an arm and two legs to get a new one. Sigh! Other than that little gremlin, my steed is ready to rock and rolla! Blu_fuz, I believe you know what my problem is? CAn you offer any help? I will re-read your post for some insight.

Thanks!
