Hi all im scott and im new obviously. i have a 95 contour gl with the 2.0L Zetec engine and im having a weird issue with my a/c.

The main problem is that it performs very poorly at idle. Ive checked the radiator fan and it comes on high and low speed as it should. my blower works fine on all speeds. I do have a professional set of manifold gauges and both pressures on the high and low side are normal. (i do have HVAC experience)

To get to the point, when idling, cold air only comes out the center register, and the side registers are musty/not very cold. If i feel the evaporator outlet pipe, its warm. If i keep the engine slightly above idle and force the radiator fan on high, the evaporator outlet gets cold and cold air comes out all the vents.

Ive tried everything, i evacuated and recharged it last year. my only other clue is that the compressor makes a moaning sound that varies with engine rpm.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Sounds normal to me, I have a '95 V6, that's what my a/c does.

In addition to needing a new can of R134 every year.

Get the UV dye added to your A/C coolant, makes it really easy to find the leak with the blacklight! That's how we found mine... ended up being a bad compressor....

The blend door is ok, ive checked. Its odd, it will be cold for about a minute, then warm up a little, then get cold.

correct me if im wrong, but if the charge is correct, the a/c should not cycle if its on max ac and max fan speed. Mine cycles in the lower blower speeds, but not in high. Im pretty sure that is normal

the a/c should cycle on and off until the ambient temp reaches a certain temp then it will not cycle.


if the system is working, and the pressures are correct, etc it could be a clutch air gap issue.

Ok, should i be concerned about the compressor making a lound moaning sound, or is that just normal noise? The noise changes in pitch with the engine rpm.

And lastly, today, it was about 88deg in omaha. when i was idling, max a/c and max fan, the compressor didn't cycle. If i held the engine slightly above idle, It would be on for about 20 seconds, then cycle off for about 7 seconds. Does that sound about right? Once again, the radiator fan comes on low and high speed as it should.

It works great when its 70 degrees out, but i don't need it when its only 70 outside.

not sure, it sounds alittle odd but it might be ok. you need to check the system pressures when its running and go from there.

I turned my a/c on max and max fan and let it sit for about 5 mins. I was getting about 27psi on the low side and 250 on the high side. The amibent temp was about 81.

Its odd, the pressures seem to be ok, but the temperature out of the evaporator doesn't seem to match. anything above idle makes the low side pipes cold, but at idle they are warm and the register temps are about 58deg.

When i vacuumed it out last year, i changed the orifice tube, the one i replaced it with wasn't the original type, it was autozone's variable rate type that they said was a performance upgrade to the a/c system. Could that be my problem? Right now im suspecting my system has some sort of restriction or needs to be flushed......so difficult, i appreciate all of you guy's input..

also, accelerating from a stop is extremely hard, i practically have to floor it to get it to go.

ok, maybe im just stuck with this since its a 1995 and old. If it is supposed to work this way, then i think ford did a crappy job of designing it. maybe they improved it in the 1996 and later models
